A crosswind caught Kai’s wingabeast as lightning flared too near. Shrilling, the winged horse tilted in flight, and Kai’s stomach lurched. A gust snatched the hood from his head and roared in his ears. He blinked to clear the stinging rain that drove into his eyes. Thunder boomed like a timpani, shaking the air. Flecht shuddered beneath him, and Kai placed a calming hand on his wingabeast’s straining neck. He did not like this long flight through the wild night any better than did Flecht.

Funny how childhood memories embed themselves in your mind, but only parts of them. I can still feel the rough paper as I turned another page in a novel from my parent’s bookcase. A precocious reader, I’d advanced long ago into adult books. I don’t remember this one’s title, but the story followed the journeys of Sir Francis Drake, an early explorer. Specific phrases are lost to me, but the vivid imagery remains. I can still hear the ship’s creaking, bask in sunlight breaking through the clouds, and taste sea salt on my lips. . .

Kai pressed something into her palm, and her fingers curled around a knife’s hilt. “They’ll need to dismount to attack with swords. I’ll defend you, but if things go badly, take Flecht and follow the weild to the inn. You’ll see it just back from the banks. You can trust the innkeeper.”

What do you do when you are alone in the world? If you're a nice middle-aged lady with a social conscience, you go to your local shelter and adopt a rescue dog. Of course, sometimes it isn't only the dog who needs to be rescued. That's when life might send you a Dancer-Dog.

Read an excerpt:

Ahead and to the right, a smaller track branched off, leading to a wooden footbridge over a small, deep creek. The barking seemed to be coming from there and I thought she had probably gone down for a drink. I was starting to get a little anxious about my chicken in the oven, so I called her again, but all I got was more barking. Drat, I would have to go get her. Turning onto the path, I spotted her standing on the bridge beside a dark, hairy lump. Oh, Lord, she had found something dead. I just hoped she wasn’t rolling in it. She was licking it as if thinking about it.

“Dancer!” I hollered, not anxious to have a reeking dog I’d somehow have to bathe in freezing weather. She looked up at me and that’s when I saw it wasn’t dead. Dancer, the dog who hated other dogs, was licking the face of a dog lying on the bridge. Wait...no...not ON the bridge. He was IN the bridge. Incredulous, I realized that all four of his legs had somehow gone through the slats and he was stuck there like a cork in a bottle, unable to extricate himself.

“Oh, my God.” I slid on my knees beside the barely- breathing lump of old, frozen, snow-covered dog. He had a thick coat like a shepherd mix, but even so rivulets of water and ice were running in ropey snarls down his sides. His face was snowy and it was that snow Dancer was licking off him.

IF MY BOOK WAS MADE INTO A MOVIE

To be honest, if this particular book was made into a movie, it would have to take on the elements of “Marley and Me.” Rather than a romance, it is a story of love…for the dog rescue that consumes my time when I am not writing and for the dog that began it all.

It was not a recent love. It has taken the passage of years for me to be ready to complete the story of Dancer, the dog I adopted from a local shelter after my husband died and the dog we had shared had also left me for the Rainbow Bridge. My house was quiet—way too quiet. Although that may be good for writing, it isn’t good for anything else.

Now, if you have read “Marley and Me”—and I love that book—I can only tell you that in terms of canine toil and trouble, Dancer ran a close second to that beloved dog character. She ate my house, she ate her crate, she tried to eat the cat and eventually the fox that lived in the woods and she gave my horses a run for their money. She terrified my neighbors’ dogs yet rescued an old dog she found at the edge of death. She was crazy and needy and neurotic and the best dog I ever had.

Eventually I had to write her book. I also had to foster dogs; I had seen the need and my house has never been without multiple dogs in all the years that followed. The canine characters that came after Dancer are indeed worthy of a movie in their own right, but she is the one that started it all. God rest you, pup, you were the best.

After his long ride, Kai relished the chance to walk. But he should not linger further. He swung into the saddle behind Shae and reached around her for the reins. Flecht adjusted to the additional burden with trained ease. Shae relaxed against him, and Kai smiled to himself at the small gesture of trust. Would that it could always be so between them. 

Kai led Flecht to the path, and the wingabeast’s hooves rang against stone in a steady cadence as the garden fell away behind them. The ancient fortress rose before them sullen and gray, while the fields and orchards beyond glowed with new light. The sharp scent of tilled soil and fresh herbs carried on the wind as they passed into the shadow of Whellein Hold. 

They entered the ancient fortress through the gatehouse archway beneath the raised iron portcullis. Following the graystone path along the sward, they skirted the great hall, which rose to impressive heights. As they neared the stables, voices, thuds, and the rustlings of crisp straw reached Kai. He dismounted and lifted his arms to Shae. Light as she was, he had to step backward when she leaned into him. He steadied them both, and then turned to instruct the groom. 

When Kai looked for her again, Shae was gone. A smile touched his mouth as he went through an archway in the inner curtain wall. He would keep his knowledge of Shae’s morning activities to himself.

How to handle negative criticism

Negative comments on this book will be like armour piercing bullets because, although I have no literary ambitions, I have laid my life out there for anyone to trample on. Or perhaps I will be impervious. It is my life and I have loved it so say what you like? I wonder.

The obvious thing to say is: just ignore negative criticism. Easier said than done and I think I will soak up everything said about this book. Because of the content I expect quite a lot of negative remarks about it and my whole life story. Although I think that negative remarks about this particular book will simply be people reviewing their own prejudices.

I hope there will plenty of good ones too. I think and hope that I am prepared but I doubt if I am sufficiently. Negative comments and opinions directed against you always hurt, sometimes dreadfully, not just in art.

But if you publish or perform or paint or whatever you are fair game so grin and bear it. Were I a professional writer I suppose I would try to learn from what is said about my work, be it positive or negative. But professionals tell me that critics rarely get to the root of things or say anything that can be used as learning fodder. What did Brendan Behan say of theatre critics? Something like, ‘The eunuchs in the harem. They see it done every night but they can’t do it themselves.’

And if you go back to 1702 there is that bitter couplet in a prologue by Thomas Farquhar:

Our dreadful foes the critics, when they spy
They cock, they charge, they fire – then back they fly.

Critics were not only foes; they were also cowards, in his view.

Alice, a Memoir

I am going to tell you our story, my darlings. It is really only for you three and one other (you know who) but I can’t help hoping that the world will read it, which is why I shall probably publish it. But not for some years. When you’re fully grown up and have flown the nest. God knows what they will make of it, the world I mean, whoever they are, but I am not suggesting that any rules or taboos should be changed by our story, or new rules made. Leave all that alone. Our story, perhaps I should say my story, just is. You could tritely call it the exception that proves the rule. Perhaps that is just what it is: unique. I doubt that but it is certainly extraordinary. I have carefully chosen those words. The word love doesn’t fully express what I/we felt. Another word that is more or less totally debased.

If you want to know about my life and background read this book. I can scarcely add to what I have written about myself in there. I earnestly hope that the rest of my life is too uneventful to even consider writing anything else, I am no novelist. The life I have described was full enough and rich enough for me. God knows what I would come out with if I had to invent. If you find you need a good chef I shall consider anything not too energetic – which rules out most jobs in the kitchen.

Jessica Kate: ​Complicated answer! The actual plot – entirely fictional. But the emotional journeys? I started writing this book at 22, working a job that didn’t lead anywhere, single, and unsure where I fit in life. I felt like I was missing out on my purpose—and so did my main character, Natalie.

A. I work full-time as a training developer at a small bank. It’s fun getting to use my creativity in a team context, especially when we make training videos. I like to pretend I’m Steven Spielberg 😉

"There is a lot going on in this story! . . . In a way, these problems almost made the story seem a bit more realistic, because we often get plagued with multiple life events that cause stress and chaos. Life is not pretty; it is messy. . . . I also want to point out that while this is listed as a Christian contemporary romance, you are not going to have Christianity shoved down your throat. To me it was more of a way at looking at how even Christians do not have perfect lives. But these people are, at the same time, using their faith to help them through. . . . So I think readers who are not necessarily interested in Christian romances would also enjoy this one."

What is one piece of advice your character, Natalie, would give us about love?

Natalie at the start of the book would bark a slightly bitter laugh and shrug, then change the subject.

Natalie at the end of the book would say that if you don’t understand how God loves you (and that your value has nothing to do with your good works or mistakes), then it’ll make your relationships much harder.

It’s when you get that clear understanding from God about your own value, then that love can more easily spill over to others.

The original seed of an idea was a story about a man and a woman who were raising a kid, but they weren’t a couple. From that I got the idea of Natalie nannying her ex-fiancé's son and it all grew from there!
