IS GOD SOVEREIGN OVER LOVE STORIES?

Amara Ikezie is a new grad nurse who is thrilled to start her dream job in Atlanta’s biggest children’s hospital. But when her best friend gets engaged, Amara is faced with the looming pressure from her mom to find her own man. Determined to escape the pressure to marry, Amara takes on a task to find the ‘perfect’ man who ticks all the boxes on her list.

Raymond Aderinto is a pediatric cardiologist with a wall of accolades and a string of failed relationships. After his fourth girlfriend dumps him, Raymond vows to get confirmation from God first before entering into his next relationship—even though he’d love to find his bride before turning thirty.

When Raymond spills coffee on Amara’s scrubs, he becomes certain she’s the woman God wants to be his wife. But unfortunately for him, Raymond doesn’t tick Amara’s boxes, and worst of all, Amara is sure her Igbo mom would never approve of a marriage to a man from the Yoruba tribe.

Despite Amara’s efforts to stay away from Raymond and convince herself he is not the one for her, her growing attraction for his character, values, and vision gives her more reasons to wonder if she was wrong about her prejudices toward him. When another doctor walks into Amara’s life who ticks all her boxes and shows interest in her, she is caught between running into his ‘perfect’ arms, or going with Raymond who is turning out to be more perfect than she thought.

The One Who Loves Me, book two in the Sovereign Love series, is a beautiful standalone novel about surrender and learning to take comfort in the sovereign goodness of a loving God who writes the best love stories.

Read an exclusive excerpt:
“Ray, I’m busy right now. Is everything alright?”

“Yeah, everything is fine. I’m so sorry for showing up unannounced like this.” I clasp my hands and search for the right words. “I…um...I realized I invited you to the youth event but never gave you the address.”

Amara raises her eyebrows in that cute little way she does, which makes me think she doesn’t believe me.

“I wasn’t sure if you were working today and I didn’t know if I would see you again before Saturday,” I add.

“Okay?” she says. It’s not irritation in her big brown eyes, but a slight indifference. “Do you have the address written down or something?” She extends her hand.

“Oh, well, since you’re busy, I have a better idea. Can I get your number instead?” I smile and when she doesn’t respond, I explain further. “So I can text you the address?”

She sends me a blank stare.

“If I write it on a piece of paper, you might lose it. Plus, what if you get lost? I’d love to find you.” I flash her another nervous smile, my heart suddenly picking up pace.

She stares and crosses her arms against her chest. Then finally, after what feels like forever, Amara cracks a smile and shakes her head. “You never give up, do you?”

Wow, look at those beautiful teeth. Fine girl. Omoge.

I scratch my head. “Are my efforts going to be in vain?”

She kisses her teeth and extends her hand again. “Where’s your phone?”

IS GOD SOVEREIGN OVER TRIUMPH AND TRAGEDY?

Bullies and family disasters have left eighteen-year-old Teeyana Sparks filled with anxiety and doubt. She feels pressured to believe in God, but as she embarks on her college journey in the hope of one day working at Google as a graphic designer, the only thing she believes in is controlling her own life. Things change when she meets Jayden Williams—the guy with a charming smile and kind heart.

Struggling with grief and recovering from a season of depression, nineteen-year-old Jayden is determined to help Teeyana believe in God’s goodness again. But when yet another tragedy strikes close to home, Teeyana’s response exposes Jayden’s unhealed wounds and tips him into a mental health relapse.

With the looming possibility of not getting her dream life, Teeyana is caught between holding on to her illusion of control and surrendering to a God she’s rejected. And as Jayden strives to break out of his despondency, he has to face that letting God in may involve him letting go of his friendship with Teeyana. Teeyana and Jayden must wrestle with uncomfortable truths, and the pride in their hearts, in order to face their biggest giant—God’s sovereignty over both triumph and tragedy.

The One Who Knows Me, book one in the Sovereign Love series, is a heart-warming standalone novel about hope and learning to take comfort in the sovereign goodness of a loving God who knows all things.

Review of Light the Way (The Lighthouse Sisters #1) by Lin Stepp

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Welcome to the book tour for Light the Way, the first book in the new Lighthouse Sisters series by Lin Stepp! Today I'm sharing with you my thoughts about this novel. Be sure to follow the tour for even more, including my interview with the author at Candrel's Crafts, Cooks, and Characters. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

Light the Way
(The Lighthouse Sisters #1)
By Lin Stepp
Christian Fiction, Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 292 Pages
April 1, 2022 by Mountain Hill Press

In this new coastal series, Lin Stepp transports her readers into the rich, colorful lives of Burke and her sisters, Lila, Gwen, and Celeste, who grew up at the Deveaux Inn and Lighthouse on a windswept island, accessible only by boat. Get ready to be introduced to the ups and downs, joys and sorrows, challenges and adventures of a Lighthouse Keeper.

Life had grown hard for Burke Deveaux at the family inn and lighthouse since her father died. She missed his warmth and still expected to see him walking into a room, his big laugh booming. Burke and her mother were gradually adjusting to the change, and Lila had come home this winter to help, but the workload was heavy. With spring coming and tourism picking up in the South Carolina Lowcountry, Burke welcomed Hal Jenkins’ request for his son Waylon to work for them. Waylon, retiring early from the Navy, knew the island and the lighthouse, having grown up nearby. Burke also knew Waylon well since they’d grown up together. He’d always been older, and she wondered how he’d see her now.

Waylon had been away from Edisto Island for over twelve years now, traveling around the world in the military, but it felt good to be home. He’d hated learning Lloyd Deveaux was gone, the warm-hearted Lighthouse Keeper he’d followed around as a boy. But he liked the idea of coming to stay at the lodge at Watch Island to help the Deveaux family with the inn, lighthouse, and nearly five-hundred acres of land the Lighthouse Station occupied. He knew Burke had picked up many of her father’s old tasks and he looked forward to seeing her again. He’d kept feelings for her clamped down for years but one look at her brought them surging back. How would he handle that with them working together?

“Each book showcases Lin Stepp’s natural gift as a novelist for originality and narrative driven storytelling.” – MIDWEST REVIEW

**My thoughts**
Light the Way was a bit of a change of pace for me, but nevertheless an entertaining read. You have history, strong family bonds, a sort of second chance romance, and a touch of mystery and suspense.

I always love reading about bigger families and small towns. There is a special kind of chemistry and bond that you can't find elsewhere. I would love to see the stories of Burke's mom and sisters fleshed out more. I believe there will be future installments that will update us on them. I think a prequel of Etta and her late husband in their early days could also be fun!

As for the relationship between Burke and Waylon, which is the focus of this installment, I love when childhood crushes are realized and given a second chance. They fit together well. Their leap to boyfriend-girlfriend felt a little abrupt and out of sync at the moment where it happened, though. Their engagement was also fast and felt a bit out of place. But their relationship quickly fell into a great pace as they grew a lot as friends while they worked together on the island.

The author is clearly well-versed in the history of the area and of lighthouses. I enjoyed learning all of that. Lighthouses fascinate me. And while we have some here on Lake Ontario, I haven't yet delved as deeply as I would like into their stories and histories.

I just felt like the information was shared awkwardly at times via conversations that the characters were having. For example, as Burke is taking Waylon around the island, she is giving him a big history lesson as if he had never been there before. But if he grew up there and spent as much time with her family as is indicated, I feel like he should have known a lot of that already. Or sometimes characters talked about places to visit and would describe where they were in ways that you wouldn't in normal conversations with people who were from the same area. I appreciated the background knowledge to help me better understand the setting, but personally would have described it differently. It just felt like the characters were doing too much of the narration.

This is an enjoyable start to a new series and I am looking forward to seeing the future installments, because I really want to know what happens to the sisters as they embark upon new chapters in their own lives.

Thank you to the author and Prism Book Tours for fulfilling my review request. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Review of Secrets of Their Past (Wander Canyon #5) by Allie Pleiter

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Welcome to the book tour for Secrets of Their Past, the fifth book in the Wander Canyon series by Allie Pleiter, part of the Harlequin Love Inspired Romance collection. Today I'm sharing with you my thoughts on this standalone novel. You can follow the tour above for even more! Best of luck entering the great giveaway!

Secrets of Their Past
(Wander Canyon #5)
By Allie Pleiter
Contemporary, Inspirational Romance
Paperback & ebook, 224 Pages
February 22, 2022 by Love Inspired

Facing the past could change his future.

Veterinarian Neal Rodgers is in Wander Canyon seeking the truth about his past—not to rescue a litter of kittens under his next-door neighbor’s porch. But persistent single-mom Tessa Kennedy is impossible to ignore—especially when she uncovers a family secret of her own. Discovering the hidden facts of their histories could be the key to unlocking everything in this small town.

**My thoughts**
This is the fifth book in the Wander Canyon series, but I felt right at home like I was already old friends with the characters in this inspirational small town romance. So if you haven't read the first four books, you'll be absolutely fine. I will admit that now I want to go back and revisit all of those stories, though!

I liked the premise of this one because it was different than most of the small town romances I have been enjoying as of late. Neal has come to town on vacation, but really, he's seeking answers to his past. Tessa, his well-meaning neighbor, ends up involved in his search and ends up finding mysteries in her own past as well. Neither one of them has been looking to pursue any kind of relationship with anyone else, but as they become friends and embark upon their searches, they strike up a close friendship that slowly burns into something a little bit more. Definitely more realistic than those quick-love stories that I so often find.

Watching their relationship build as they work to unravel their pasts made for a great evening read. I enjoyed my trip to this town and will have to go back for more!

Thank you to the publisher and Prism Book Tours for my requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Paint Me Fearless
(Shady Gully #1)
By Hallie Lee
Christian Contemporary Fiction
Paperback, ebook & audiobook, 322 Pages
January 6, 2021 by WordCrafts Press

Although their petite appearances are strikingly similar, ROBIN and DESIREE (DESI) have little in common. When Desi moves to the small town of Shady Gully, Louisiana, the unpopular Robin feels diminished by the new girl's notoriety.

But fate has other ideas, and as these two isolated girls are drawn together, a friendship born in high school evolves into a bond that promises to last a lifetime. Even as their paths diverge, and they clumsily marry and plow through raising families of their own, they remain true.

Even as they nurse their respective bruises, and carry their traumas from childhood into their own marriages, they always have each other's backs. Even when a sordid secret from their past emerges to threaten their families, together...they remain a force to be reckoned with.

Until years later, when they're enjoying the prime of their lives, a stunning rumor surfaces that threatens their lifelong connection. The allegation suggests that one has betrayed the other.

Truth? Lie? Does it matter? Sometimes just the hint of betrayal is enough to ruin a lifelong bond.

As their worlds collide, and old insecurities rise to the forefront, the layers of Desi and Robin's legendary friendship begin to unravel.

Just when it seems they've lost everything, the truth brings them full circle...and in their brokenness they come to realize that there is only one true way to fill the emptiness inside, to quiet the lies...and to ultimately become...fearless.

(Robin)

When I heard the sporty guys tromping into class, I straightened my shirt over the roll around my belly. Converse shoes and flashes of blue and white everywhere, the junior high athletes liked to make an entrance. Lenny, the quarterback, headed straight for the window. Supposedly he had the talent to go varsity, whatever that meant.

He raised his arms, held up his imaginary gun, and shot a fluffy squirrel, who fluttered along the branch of an oak tree just outside the classroom window.

“Puuhhh. Puuhhh.” Gunshot sounds. Lenny nodded, pleased with his aim.

“Nailed him,” confirmed Ricky, his best friend.

The squirrel looked fine to me. In fact, he came closer to the window, twitched his tail, and chomped on an acorn while giving Lenny the eye.

“I’ma get me a few this weekend at my camp.” Mitch tugged at his blue-and-white letter jacket, winking at his friends. “Squirrels, I mean.”

I rolled my eyes. Mitch was some kind of back. Halfback, fullback, hunchback, I don’t know, but of all the sporty guys, I hated him the most. Number one, he wasn’t even cute or foxy. Number two, he always acted like he was in on some secret that you weren’t, as if you weren’t good enough to even imagine all the great things going on in his world. Like stupid hunting trips at some camp in the swamp. And number three, Mitch acted like this camp in the swamp was the playboy mansion, and he himself was the old perv guy kissing all the girls.

About the Author

Born and raised in Louisiana, most of Hallie Lee’s screenplays and novels are set in the south. Inspired by a landscape rich with cantankerous, salt of the earth folks, Hallie’s characters tend to be dramatic, but kind, and quirky, but smarter than they appear.

A move to the creative community of Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2005 gave her the opportunity to take up screenwriting. As her screenplays were recognized with awards and placements in various contests, she had the opportunity to learn from award winning talents like Kirk Ellis (The John Adams miniseries) and Ronnie Clemmer (A League of Their Own).

But alas, her heart is southern, and when she and her family made another move to Kentucky, it renewed her passion for writing novels. And southern story telling.

Paint Me Fearless is the first in The Shady Gully Series, a series which promises thought provoking, relatable journeys whose cast of characters tend to be ornery, but loveable.

It’s women’s literature. It’s book club fiction. It's faith based. It’s Hallie Lee.

The Wise One
(The Scottish Scrolls #1)
By K.T. Anglehart
Young Adult Fairy Tale, Folklore, Fantasy
Hardcover, Paperback & ebook, 254 Pages
October 25, 2020 by Kat Biggie Press

Worlds collide for both young and mature readers, who will love the fast-paced thrills, chemistry between characters, and interplay of witchy fantasy, mythology, Celtic folklore, and reality in The Wise One—book one of The Scottish Scrolls series.

Mckenna's never thought much of her nightmares, but on her seventeenth birthday, a vivid dream of burning at the stake awakens her dormant abilities, thrusting her into a world where faeries are real, spirits hold a grudge, and a High Priestess obsessed with a 16th-century prophecy is tracking her every move.

Now, her overprotective dads, Seán and Andre, are forced to tell her the truth—they know who her birth mother is, and her life is not the surrogate story she's always been told. Abigail, Mckenna's mom, is some sort of mystic, and Mckenna a Wise One.

Whatever the hell that means.

With the help of a persistent little wren and company of a newfound friend, Mckenna journeys to Ireland in search of her mother and real answers. Along the way, she learns to harness her innate magic and trust her intuition, as best she can anyway—Cillian, a kind and passionate delegate who crosses her path, is proving much harder to read.

Only her mother could truly help her halt her ill fate and prepare her for what's to come . . . before she gives in to the darkness she knows is buried deep within.

Author K.T. Anglehart expertly weaves a story set in Ireland that is both timeless and unique, a perfect cross-market read for those searching for the next endearing urban fantasy classic.

Excerpt Chapter 14—Lessons in Ballycastle

A sulphery scent filled the air, carried by a chill breeze. Pulled by the rushing sound of waves, Mckenna walked to the road’s end. Far below, the sea whispered its calming notes, both melodic and fierce, as though longing to impart wisdom to the land and sky. “I hadn’t realized we drove so high up.”

“Beautiful, isn’t it? Come, we’ve got a wee trek. Hope you’re wearing comfortable shoes.”

She followed Esme about a mile down a red dirt path, which gradually wound downwards to the water’s edge.

“Where are we?” Mckenna said as a rocky landmass came into view.

“Below, where you see the rock formation—that’s the Giant’s Causeway.”

As they drew nearer, Mckenna did a double take at the dramatic sight before her: At the foot of the cliffs lay uneven hills of thousands upon thousands of interlocked black rocks in the shape of hexagons. Like a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, the pieces fit together flawlessly. Esme urged Mckenna to walk around the site. She did, stepping up and down from stone to stone.

How could they have formed so perfectly? And why were they all at different heights? How were they floating on the sea?

That was when she realized . . . “Esme, these aren’t rocks, are they? These are columns.”

“Indeed. Forty thousand columns beneath the sea—basalt columns, meaning they’re formed from lava. Some as tall as thirty-nine feet. All of this was the result of a volcanic eruption some fifty million years ago, during the Tertiary period—but of course, there’s also an Irish legend that explains it all.” Mckenna smiled at this. “A Scottish giant, Benandonner, challenged an Irish giant, Fionn MacCool, to a fight. Being very proud, Fionn accepted and built a causeway across the North Channel to Scotland for the two to battle. But when Fionn saw the size of Benandonner, he ran back to Ireland and had his wife disguise him as a baby.

“The funny bit is, when Benandonner saw the size of the baby, he thought, ‘if the baby’s that big, can’t imagine his dad!’ So, he bolted back to Scotland, destroying the causeway along the way. Across the sea to the Scottish isle of Staffa, there are the same columns, made of the same basalt.”

“So, which story is true?” If faeries and ghosts existed, why not giants?

“Which do you believe?”

Her words should deflate him. They should puncture him with disappointment. Instead, they fueled the burning flame inside of him. She knew who she was and what she wanted. He admired her strength and her honesty. A pursuit that should sink him in defeat brought on a surge of victory. He’d found the right woman to share the rest of his life with. He’d wait for her and he would win her. Love would melt her aversions. Her heart was on his side.

Matthew stood and assisted Margaret to her feet. As soon as she’d gained solid footing, he eased her into his embrace. “I’ll wait.” He whispered the words while searching the depths of her eyes.

Margaret’s arm slid over his shoulder and around his neck as if it followed its own pleasures without any effort from her at all. She returned the serious gaze while an unseen bond drew them together.

Her lips didn’t resist when his own rested on them. The sweet contact lasted for just a few brief moments, but it was long enough to convince him that only a woman willing to consider marrying him would share a kiss like that one.

She pulled away first and stared at him with large startled eyes. Questions and fear lurked on her face. If she was afraid of him or of her own readiness to yield to him, her silence didn’t say. Matthew smiled at her with a large, satisfied grin that stretched across his whole face, the first one of its kind in a very long time.

where she stood, El saw the fine cut of his clothes and knew this was no

commoner. Even this close to death, there was a pride and arrogance to his

posture as he looked out unseeingly at the crowd.

It was then that she saw the other man standing beside him. At first, he

seemed a less impressive figure: still muscled, perhaps slightly shorter. But it

was this man’s face that held her.

He was the type of man who would only become more striking as he

aged; at fifty or so years, he was still in excellent health, with an unfurrowed

forehead and high cheekbones and a full mouth. He was not handsome, but

his eyes were dark and compelling, and, unlike the condemned man, he

looked fully at the crowd before him, as if seeking the face of each one and

trying to win him over.

And then he began to speak.

Although she did not perfectly understand the words—he was far away

and spoke quickly in a thick accent—their effect was undeniable, even on her.

His voice was rich and smooth and unquestionably powerful, the kind that

stirred a person to passionate action, even that which would result in his own

death. His voice was the toll of a bell against which all else was measured. It

meant life at the same time that it meant death. It betrayed a mind at once

cautiously hopeful, courageously daring, and righteously angry. She felt the

mood of the crowd change as they were swept along by the man’s honeyed

tones: their murmurs rose and fell with his; their eyes lifted heavenward as

his did, then descended with loathing on the object of his hatred.

Lyrian Wallace was only ten years old when the Malevolence struck on October 10, 2056. She thought the next decade had numbed her to the grief, the death, the bots, and the daily struggle for survival. She lost her parents when they became Sleepers, but like everyone else, she had pieced together a new family. Lyrian was almost content when the Alliance began taking them . . .

The world always took things away from her. She could only live for today and never dared to hope for any heaven. But when her circumstances change, Lyrian must choose how she might live for both this life and the next.

What if Katniss Everdeen had been a Christian?

What if the “girl on fire” had been on fire for Jesus? Maybe it seems like a crazy idea, but dystopian stories like the Hunger Games typically take place in a broken future version of our Earth, and Panem seems no different. Jesus is important to over a billion people on the planet today, and people often turn to God even more in difficult times. The Hunger Games themselves seem a shadow of the barbaric spectacles of the ancient Roman colosseum where Christians were often among the victims tragically killed for sport and fed to wild beasts. A Christian Katniss shouldn’t be that far-fetched.

So, how would Katniss’s story have been different if she were a follower of Christ?

Undoubtedly, she still would have felt the self-sacrificing urge to protect her sister from being selected to the Games. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13 NASB). Stepping forward in place of Prim was very Christ-like of Katniss.

Katniss was a fighter, but this instinct might have been blunted by her zeal to imitate Christ. Depending on her Christian beliefs, she might have ranged from opposing premeditated murder to strict pacifism. As such, she likely would have prepared for the Games quite differently, focusing primarily on evasive, survival, and defensive skills. The camouflaging techniques that Peeta used would have been perfect.

Beyond her preparation and approach to the violence of the Games, I think the biggest change for Katniss would be her ability to cope with her circumstances. Because of her faith in Jesus and hope for eternal life, she could find peace despite her bleak situation.

Could Katniss have still won the Hunger Games? Even if she were unwilling to kill the other tributes? While exceedingly difficult, it would be possible. The arena itself was designed to foster death. To win the Hunger Games, Katniss would have had to outlast the other tributes. Perhaps, she would have still made it home as a victor, but if not, she would have achieved her ultimate victory in Christ.
