In Strategy Quest: The Executive Guide for Finding Business Opportunities, you will learn how to achieve the strategic mindset necessary to create and decide on the business opportunities that will put you ahead of your competition.

Using the psychology of personality type, you will understand how to make the shift to this growth mindset. In Strategy Quest, you will learn that the strategic mindset is composed of Strategic Intuition and Strategic Thinking. Strategic Intuition creates strategic visions and concepts, while strategic thinking decides if these are genuinely strategic and the right choice for your business.

Strategy Quest uses business examples to show what the strategic mindset is and isn’t. The book also equips you with the tools that you will need for your Strategy Quest and shows you how to overcome the obstacle that you might encounter.

Read an exclusive excerpt:
Unfortunately, there is a strong bias in business in favor of the tactical mindset that eschews intuition. As noted by University of Toronto Professor of Psychology, Dr. Jordan Peterson, “It’s a real conundrum . . . in most businesses the non-creative people are increasingly being replaced by machines . . . There is increasing demand in corporations for creative people, but the problem with being creative is that you are useless at the bottom of the dominance hierarchy. Because, at the bottom of the dominance hierarchy, you should do what you’re told to do, you’re not there to think outside the box; you are there to learn what you are supposed to do and implement it . . . that’s not how creative people work . . . Companies filter out all the creative people at the bottom, but creative people are needed at the top” (4). Recall that even Steve Jobs was weeded out of Apple until, twelve years later, the company realized that they needed his visionary leadership and reinstated him as CEO.

Using strategic intuition is an open-ended process with uncertain outcomes and to managers, may seem like a waste of time. Having problems to solve, things to approve, decisions to make, people to direct and deadlines to meet, managers tend to be task-oriented and schedule-driven. Many acquire a feeling of importance by having a full schedule of meetings, being very busy and in high demand.
To ensure that they meet their short-term objectives, many managers get involved in almost every issue, attend every meeting they can, and micromanage their staff. Their satisfaction is attained by checking off items on their to-do list and knowing every detail of what is happening in the business. Finding time for strategic leadership means finding ways to be less occupied with management activities. Leaders must prioritize and delegate work, eliminate low-value distractions, avoid micromanaging, and be selective with the meetings that they attend.

Unfortunately, the tactical orientation of management often results in actions that further reduce the time for finding strategic opportunities. In the hope of improving planning and execution, managers often increase their tactical focus. The result is increasing numbers of reports, meetings, performance metrics, and policies that result in more time spent managing and less time leading. Executives must be very careful about adding work and look for elegant solutions that don’t depend on more people doing more things that they must then manage.

Even though strategic thinking comes as close as possible to understanding whether a concept is a strategic opportunity, it doesn’t provide the certainty that managers seek for tactical planning and execution. The result is that many will struggle with a decision to move forward with truly strategic opportunities. They might even forgo these in the hope of finding certainty, but such opportunities do not exist.
