Review of Who Is My Neighbor? by Amy-Jill Levine

Blues and Yellows just don't mix, and that's how it's always been. No one remembers why. But then comes the day Midnight Blue takes a tumble along the road. His friends Navy and Powder Blue don't even stop to help! It's only when a Yellow comes along that everything changes—forever.

This creative story is sure to prompt rich conversations, encouraging new ways of seeing our neighbors and ourselves. A note for parents and educators is included.

Book Links

**My thoughts**
Reading this story of the Blues versus the Yellows, I very quickly was able to pick up on the parallels between it and the parable of the Good Samaritan. The two groups are taught to never interact with each other. And then one day, Midnight Blue is out riding his bike and gets hurt. Instead of helping, other Blues just pass him by. It's only one of the Yellows, Lemon who helps out. And as they two get to know each other, they decide that their new friendship proves that it's okay to be friends in spite of coming from two different groups. And they teach this to their own communities.

It's another cute story that is illustrating this parable in a new way that may make some more sense to young children than the original one. And I also enjoyed how there were all different kinds of blues and yellows named, as a way of showing that there is a spectrum of each color. My artistic side appreciated that.

I will admit I did keep waiting for the yellows and blues to eventually combine to create greens! I think some children may do the same, because it just seems like a natural next step with introducing primary colors for the different groups of people.

At the end, there is a detailed explanation for parents and educators to read about how this story parallels The Good Samaritan and other historical contexts, plus potential discussion questions.

Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for fulfilling my review request. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Walking to Jerusalem by Chris Hill is available for pre-order

Walking to Jerusalem

Small beginnings. Detours along the way. Questions about how and when God is going to fulfill His purposes. We know the end of David’s story, but David only knew it step by step. Like us, he had to follow God’s path even when it seemed too slow. He had to believe that realizing our life’s purpose is only the beginning of our calling, not the culmination of it. He had to trust that God sometimes allows years to go by between an anointing and a crown.

In Walking to Jerusalem, Dr. Chris Hill travels through the twelve cities that shaped David’s life and explores what those places mean in light of God’s calling to us. Dr. Hill also walks with us through the “cities” in his own remarkable story. Along the way, you will discover, or reawaken, your own unique calling. You will more fully understand the places you have already traveled, become attuned to the spiritual city where God has you now, and be better equipped for where God is leading you.

Walking to Jerusalem reminds us that where we start does not determine where we end up. Each step we take is a part of who we will become. So journey with David from his Bethlehem beginnings to his Jerusalem home. Discover with this shepherd boy that destiny is never just a destination. It’s a process God uses to shape who He has called us to be.

'Texting Through Time: John Taylor and the Mystery Puzzle' Book Tour

Book Description:

Micah and Alicia are excited to meet John Taylor as a child in England. But when their phone won’t let them return to their own time, they’ll follow the prophet around the world, learning some important lessons along the way. Humorous, entertaining, and informative, this book is a wonderful introduction to church history that’s bound to be a family favorite!

**My thoughts**

Apparently, this Texting Through Time book is the second in a series. This is the only one that I have read, but I am curious to read some more. In this series, brother and sister, Micah and Alicia, have a Magic Tree House-like experience, in which they get to travel through time to meet important people in the Mormon church's history. Instead of a book, they have a magical cell phone from their father. They cannot return home until they have solved a puzzle and learned some very important lessons.

This story is a good one for kids to read to help them remember the teachings of the church, and to live the lives they were meant to lead. Church history is very important, as is finding and living your faith. Kids will enjoy reading the adventures. Parents and teachers can use this as a basis for discussion with the kids. It would be appropriate to read with middle elementary and older. Some younger ones may enjoy the story, but will need some discussion to help them understand what is going on. Older kids, and kids-at-heart, will also feel their hearts fill with joy as they read this adventure. Mine did.

Meet the Author:

My grandmother lived with us when I was young. She loved to read me stories. I would curl up in her lap or sit on the bed next to her and listen to the tales spin out before me. We cried together over Lassie Come Home and loved Madeline and her adventures. That was a magical time for me in my life. When my children were little, I loved reading to them because it kept the magic alive. Now my children are grown, I can keep the magic by writing stories for others to read.

I love to read and write stories about the pioneer prophets.

Pioneers live all over the world. I still have family in Switzerland and Poland. Where do you and your ancestors come from? Write and tell me.

I am like the pioneers because I love:
  • Old fashioned cooking—making butter
  • Pioneer games—button, button, who’s got the button?
  • Crafts the pioneers enjoyed—drying wild flowers

Review of 'Parenting With Scripture'

Parenting With Scripture is geared toward parents of children ages two through teens. It defines a teachable moment: how to find one and what it actually is. Discussion questions are designed to help the parent grab a hold of those teachable moments with his or her children. Different ideas can help you tailor each lesson to fit the individual situation. Included are verses that fit a variety of situations. Parents are encouraged to discuss the situation, pray about it with their children, and to memorize those verses.

Topics include anger, cursing, hope, death, humility, idolatry, kindness, charity, mercy, obedience, money, perseverance, respect, responsibility, sharing and more. Each topic is clearly defined in its own section, with the related verses, discussion questions and activities. Sections are short, providing a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the topic. Related topics are also listed for further reference. Parents will want to have read the book in advance to have a basic understanding of it. It would be hard to always have these topics at hand in those teachable moments and to have all of those verses memorized and ready to go. Being familiar with the book would allow the parent to quickly refer to it for guidance.

The appendix includes the full text of the Ten Commandments, Beatitudes and more. It also explains how to memorize verses, how to pray for your child, and how to tailor each lesson to the individual child.

This book would also be useful in a Sunday School situation.

I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This post is also published on Books for Parents & Teachers.
