Cedar Fort Books are actually responsible for the birth of this blog. I have another blog that usually houses my book reviews for adults, over at Andi's Book Reviews. That was my original book blog. Some of the books, though, can be somewhat racy. I don't mind a variety of books like that, but some readers and authors do. So, to be respectful to the authors I love over at Cedar Fort, and to readers who do not want the spicier selections, I created Uplifting Reads.
What I love about Cedar Fort books is the wide variety that are available. Yes, they are an LDS community, so many books are available on Christianity and Mormon beliefs. You'll also find books on parenting, chapter books for kids about history and fantasy, young adult books about good vs. evil, and historical romance. You'll even find some great cookbooks by Wendy Paul. I use her ice cream book in my classroom. I honestly haven't met a book that I didn't like.
Visit their website and take a look around. You'll also find guest posts by authors and interviews. Bloggers can sign up to join blog tours and get some great free reads in return.
Happy reading!
Lift up your spirits as you explore some of these uplifting reads, from all walks of life.

Review of 'Fractured Light' by Rachel McClellan
Book Blurb:
Llona Reese is used to living on the run. After the Vykens killed her parents, she knew they would eventually come for her too. But she never felt ready to face them until now. Defying the Auran Council and everything she s been taught, Llona must learn to use her power over light as a weapon if she wants to survive.
**My thoughts**
I signed up to tour the second book in this series, Fractured Soul, and asked if I could also have a copy of this one, so that I could understand the second book.
This book was a nice change of pace for me. Yes, it's a young adult book about a girl with powers, but it was a little different. There are no witches, vampires, shifters (per se), nor werewolves. Llona is an Aura. Her mother was an Aura. Her father had his own powers. She has grown up knowing about the Light, though she doesn't come into her own with it until she is in her senior year of high school.
Llona's parents are both dead. Her mother was murdered and her father was killed in a car accident. She lives with her Uncle Jake. Whenever she doesn't feel safe, the two of them move somewhere else. She is also shy, because of her powers. She knows that when the moon is in its full cycle, she is extremely powerful and filled with energy. As the moon fades back to a new moon, she loses her powers and become significantly weaker. This doesn't make her very popular with the other kids, especially her basketball team. It's safer and easier for her to just keep to herself.
But then she gives in to cultivating friendships with other kids and finds that she can be happier. In fact, her almost best friend May is harboring some of her own powers. Her math teacher, Mr. Steele, is a beautiful sight to behold. Matt gets her involved in book club. And then there is Christian.
Ah, Christian. He seems to be interested, but then doesn't. He watches out for her and takes good care of her. He also holds the answers to so many secrets about her self, her true heritage, and what the future may hold for her. They work well together and even he finds out somethings he doesn't know.
This book captivated me, holding my attention all the way through, and it flowed nicely. I am glad that I have the second book on hand, instead of having to wait a year for it!

'Tide Ever Rising' Book Tour & Review
Blurb:
Kadence Reynold’s favorite pastime is exploring old ghost towns,
but when she and her sister, Maysha, stumble across an old journal and
cheap pendant hidden in the depths of a crumbling foundation near
Eureka, Utah, their world is suddenly turned upside down. Immediately,
strange dreams and premonitions begin to haunt “Kadie” as she learns
more about the author of the journal, Charlotte Clark. Kadie sets out on
a journey to learn more about Charlotte and her family, and she and
Maysha travel to Bremerton, Washington, where they discover Charlotte's
still living twin sister, Adelaide and her family.
Kadie and Maysha, upon arriving in Washington, are immediately immersed
in Adelaide and Charlotte’s story. Kadie soon learns that Charlotte
disappeared the night of a tragic fire that took the lives of Adelaide’s
entire family. With the help of Logan Mathews, Adelaide’s handsome
grandson, and Charlotte’s ever disconcerting presence, Kadie delves into
the past. Hoping to solve the mystery of Charlotte’s disappearance,
Kadie immediately discovers the secrets contained in the journal will
toss her and Adelaide’s family into a world filled with mystery, past
regrets, and dark unknowns.
Read a brief excerpt:
The can, though rusty in spots, still showed the original yellow paint and black lettering clearly. Kadie clasped the can in her hands and shook it gently. The contents clanged and thumped within, and she grinned. Whatever was inside were definitely not coffee grounds.
**My thoughts**
I do love a good ghost story. I felt like I was there with Kadie and Maysha as they were exploring the ruins of Charlotte and Adelaide's home. I am like Kadie and like to explore places like that while out hiking. I love to get immersed in the history, and would have probably done the same thing she did. At least as far as researching the history. I am not sure that I would have driven across a few states to hunt down the poor woman!
Maysha is not one of my favorite people. She seems kind of whiny and often inserts her foot into her mouth. But even sisters can be total opposites! Logan is interesting and quite possibly someone I would also like to get to know better. He is quite generous and alluring and also loves a good mystery.
The truth about the family just gets more and more interesting, the deeper they delve into it.
This book was a quick and easy read that kept me entertained in one evening.

'The Unlikely Gift of Treasure Blume' by Lisa Rumsey Harris
Book Blurb:
With her love of sweaters, goofy hair, and awkward manners—not to mention her family curse—Treasure Blume knows love is not in her future. That is, until she matches wits with Dennis Cameron, a divorced chef with a six-year-old daughter. Full of mischief, mayhem, and laugh-out-loud humor, this is an unlikely love story you’ll want to read over and over again!
**My thoughts**
I am madly in love with Treasure Blume! Sure, she is awkward and a little weird. Her self-esteem has taken a massive hit due to her family curse. But finally, she has found her niche as a teacher.
What I love the most about Treasure is that she has a strong love for her students. She wants to do whatever it takes to help them succeed, often going above and beyond the call of duty. I tend to feel the same way about my students and hope that I show it as well as she does.
Dennis is a good match for her. He is able to help her realize how wonderful she is as he brings out her best side. His family is also amazing. Sure, their relationship is relatively taboo since Dennis' daughter is in her class. In the end, though, shouldn't true love prevail?
I have to agree with the book blurb in that this is a book that I will revisit and read again. It made me laugh and cry all at once. Definitely one of my favorites from 2012. It was well written and characters are well-developed. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Meet the Author:
I live in a little cottage in Garner, North Carolina, a small town just outside of Raleigh, with my husband, Tom. Our three children are grown and (mostly) gone, but our needy cat, Pepper, makes sure we’re not bored–especially as she likes to sit in front of the computer screen while I type. We have six grandchildren who keep all of us on our toes.
I may be a grandmother, but I’m young at heart. I love working with the youth and am only happier when I’m writing for them and about them. Along with the best career of all as a wife and a mother, I’ve been a personnel assistant, registered nurse, home-school teacher, local newspaper lady, and bookstore clerk. Now, I happily add writer to those. One of my favorite quotes is from George Elliott, “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” I believe this applies not just to a writing career, but to everything in life. After all, succeeding at new things just takes faith and trust and a little bit of fairy dust…

'Texting Through Time: John Taylor and the Mystery Puzzle' Book Tour
Book Description:
Micah and Alicia are excited to meet John Taylor as a child in England. But when their phone won’t let them return to their own time, they’ll follow the prophet around the world, learning some important lessons along the way. Humorous, entertaining, and informative, this book is a wonderful introduction to church history that’s bound to be a family favorite!
**My thoughts**
Apparently, this Texting Through Time book is the second in a series. This is the only one that I have read, but I am curious to read some more. In this series, brother and sister, Micah and Alicia, have a Magic Tree House-like experience, in which they get to travel through time to meet important people in the Mormon church's history. Instead of a book, they have a magical cell phone from their father. They cannot return home until they have solved a puzzle and learned some very important lessons.
This story is a good one for kids to read to help them remember the teachings of the church, and to live the lives they were meant to lead. Church history is very important, as is finding and living your faith. Kids will enjoy reading the adventures. Parents and teachers can use this as a basis for discussion with the kids. It would be appropriate to read with middle elementary and older. Some younger ones may enjoy the story, but will need some discussion to help them understand what is going on. Older kids, and kids-at-heart, will also feel their hearts fill with joy as they read this adventure. Mine did.
Meet the Author:
My grandmother lived with us when I was young. She loved to read me stories. I would curl up in her lap or sit on the bed next to her and listen to the tales spin out before me. We cried together over Lassie Come Home and loved Madeline and her adventures. That was a magical time for me in my life. When my children were little, I loved reading to them because it kept the magic alive. Now my children are grown, I can keep the magic by writing stories for others to read.
I love to read and write stories about the pioneer prophets.
Pioneers live all over the world. I still have family in Switzerland and Poland. Where do you and your ancestors come from? Write and tell me.
I am like the pioneers because I love:
- Old fashioned cooking—making butter
- Pioneer games—button, button, who’s got the button?
- Crafts the pioneers enjoyed—drying wild flowers

'Jeremy's Christmas Journey' Book Tour with Music
Book description:
For Jeremy, Christmas is just another reminder that he’ll never be able to enjoy the things that come so easily to other children. Then one night he has a dream that will change everything.
Accompanied by stirring music, this story of finding faith and discovering the power of the Master Healer is sure to be cherished at Christmastime and all year long.
**My thoughts**
This book is a touching reminder of how you need to hold onto your faith, even when in the depths of despair. Jeremy has been unable to walk for most of his life and doubts the faith so easily demonstrated by his parents. He just doesn't feel like he has been touched, due to his predicament.
In his dream, he observes numerous witnesses, literally giving their testimonies before a court, as to how Jesus is a healer. Some of them even had their faith revitalized because of their interactions with Him. Each testimony is a reminder to Jeremy of how important faith can be. Will he learn from this?
Each character who provides a testimony is someone who appears in various Bible stories. Each one sings a song, to demonstrate his or her path to redemption. Music is provided at the end of the book, for those who wish to perform the songs. You can also purchase an accompanying CD. I could see this book being used in a series of lessons for either Christmas or Easter. It would also make for a fun musical program for kids and/or adults to put on around the holidays.
About the author:
Scott Johnson spent most of his childhood in Orem, Utah, where he gained a love for creative writing. Recognizing his potential at a young age, his teachers and family encouraged him to explore his developing writing talents.

Scott, his wife and four children reside in Utah County where they enjoy the mountains and outdoors. Scott is regularly asked by his children to share an original story, which he gladly obliges.

'Saving Savanna' by Sara Fitzgerald Book Blog Tour
Welcome to the blog tour for Saving Savanna by Sara Fitzgerald!
I received a complimentary eARC in exchange for my honest review of this book, as a part of the Cedar Fort Book tour.
Book blurb:
Devan can’t help but blame God for his wife’s death, so the last thing
he wants to do this holiday season is celebrate. But when his daughter,
Savanna, makes a special Christmas wish, their little family will never
be the same. Filled with faith and tenderness, this heartwarming story
is sure to remind you of the real power behind the magic of Christmas.
Read an excerpt:
Devan swallowed and then changed the subject. “We only have three days left until Santa comes down our chimney. What do you want him to bring you?”
“There’s only one thing I want from him,” she whispered, leaning toward him.
He forced a smile. “And what’s that?”
“I want Mommy back.”
**My thoughts**
That excerpt alone was enough to do me in, and I knew I needed to request this book for the tour. The pain of losing a parent was horrible enough at the age of 33. I can't imagine having it happen at the mere age of 5. How do you explain that to a young child?
Devan has been struggling with his faith since his wife was brutally taken away from him and his daughter. It doesn't seem fair that God would do this to them, especially not a just and loving God. He cannot understand that everything happens for a reason, even if we don't understand it. It's hard for him to function, even though he needs to be there for his young daughter. aaaaaaa
Sometimes, all it takes is one significant event to bring everything back into perspective. His revelation may surprise you and will definitely make your eyes moist.
This is a short story, only 16 pages long. But it is a powerful one.

'Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand' Book Tour
Here is a brief description of the book:
After her husband’s death, Roxanna Drew is left with more beauty than fortune. Now, desperate to escape the perils of her past life, she must learn to trust the dashing Lord Winn—a broken man with a past of his own. This award-winning romance by bestselling author Carla Kelly is tenderly written and sure to find a place in your heart.Purchase on Amazon
**My Thoughts**
I do not often read romance books in this genre, which I have read is the "Regency" genre. I decided to give it a shot, though, because I enjoyed Carla Kelly's book My Loving Vigil Keeping. I will admit that it took me a little bit to get into the book. Once I did, though, I was drawn into the story.
I enjoyed the banter between Roxanna and Winn. I fell madly in love with her little girl. It's a sweet romance, with plenty of emotion to keep you turning the pages.

'Sisterhood of Strength' Book Tour and Review
Book Description:
Experience for yourself the pure love that inspires ordinary women to serve and accept service in a truly extraordinary manner. This inspiring collection of true stories from the lives of women just like you is told with heartwarming sincerity. Perfect for sharing, this remarkable book is sure to uplift, encourage, and cheer any woman, whether it’s her turn to serve or be served.
About the author:
I’m a wife, mother of seven, and grandmother of two originally from Alaska, but currently live in Utah with my family and now consider myself a true city girl at heart. I will readily admit I don’t miss the giant mosquitoes or the cold and long, dark winters way up North, but I absolutely miss the fresh seafood. Fish and chips made with fresh-caught halibut is my favorite!
My beginning as a writer started in elementary school when a poem I had written for a contest was chosen as a winner, set to music, and sung by the whole school at an assembly. I wrote my first picture book, 11 pages long in fifth grade as an assignment, bound it myself and have read it to my children several times. The next book I wrote, I was in eighth grade, 48 pages long with photograph’s and was a memoir.
The first edition of my first published novel, Torn Apart was released in July 2008, when I was 42 years old, the second edition under a new publisher was released nationally in February of 2009. So…never give up on your dream of writing. I’m currently working on my third novel.
When I’m not imagining a new plot-line or typing frantically away at my computer, I love to spend time with my family, read (my favorite genre is romantic suspense) travel, cook or bake something delicious, sew, scrap-book, or work on crafts.
The best advice I would give on how to become a better writer is to read and write everyday!. You can find more about Diony at diony-george.blogspot.com.
Buy from Amazon http://amzn.to/MDO6ar
**My thoughts**
This is the kind of book you read for inspiration when you are feeling down and low. It is a reminder that good people are out there, just when you need them, and when you least expect them. You could sit and read the entire book at once. I think it would have more meaning to read one or two stories at a time. It could make for a great coffee table book, for you and guests to pick up and peruse when the feeling strikes.
I am always amazed at the strength that we women have. It is always there within us, even when we feel like we are struggling. I am also amazed at the power of paying it forward. It is something I strive to do on a regular basis. The stories in this book are powerful and moving. I found myself with tears in my eyes on more than one occasion.

'101 Gourmet Ice Cream Creations' Blog Tour and Review
101 Gourmet Ice Cream Creations
Book Blurb:
Bestselling author and dessert genius, Wendy Paul is back with a collection of tasty flavors and unique ice cream treats from fun-loving triple berry to exotic mango lime to scrumptious fried ice cream. Perfect for experts and novices alike, these mouthwatering creations are guaranteed to sweeten up any party and make all your friends and family scream for ice cream!
**My thoughts**
A word of advice: do NOT read this book when you are hungry! I actually cracked it open before breakfast the other morning. I hadn't even gotten my morning cup of coffee, yet. I was completely drooling as I flipped through the pages, taking note of those that I need to try sooner rather than later. Trying to decide on which one to start with is almost impossible. There are so many delectable choices!
One thing I love about this book is that you have choices for every season of the year. For example, right now in the middle of summer is the perfect time to try the Triple Berry. Winter is a good time to try the Egg Nog. Harvest Apple options or the pumpkin milkshake is perfect for fall. As Wendy notes, however, you can easily make these year-round. For example, she recommends using frozen berries when they are out of season, to make that Triple Berry ice cream. Ice cream recipes work better when the additions are already cold or frozen, anyway.
In addition to the ice cream creations, Wendy also provides recipes for toppings, milkshakes and more, to satisfy the tastes and desires of anybody who enjoys ice cream. The photographs are also quite inspirational and drool-worthy. It's a valuable collection to anyone's cookbook library. I need a hard copy now!
I received a complimentary review copy in exchange for my honest review of this book.

'A Glimpse of Heaven' Blog Tour
A Glimpse of Heaven
Book Blurb:
Be reminded of the purpose of life and the fact that each of us, as God’s children, has been sent to earth to accomplish a mission uniquely our own. As you read this book, you’ll understand God in ways never before comprehended—your significant worth to your Creator and his significant worth to you. Appreciate your loved ones and your Heavenly Father like never before in this comforting and inspiring experience.
My thoughts:
I can't imagine how difficult it must have been for Joanna Oblander to write this book. In it, she bears her soul as she shares her faults and some spiritual experiences that many would pass off as her being a delusional woman. She does so as a testimony to her faith. Some people are going to believe. Some people are going to acknowledge similar experiences in their own lives. Some are going to blow it off. It is the nature of this kind of story.
Joanna shares many spiritual visions that she had over the years, that helped to shape her life. She opens with a series in which she was taken for an out-of-body experience, visiting classrooms of sorts, to teach her about her pre-mortal life. The majority of the book focuses on a vision that she and her husband shared of their future children. Some of them came naturally, while the others were adopted after several years of searching and difficult trials to overcome. The focus on her children was what kept her going through some of life's most difficult times. Those experiences also helped to shape her faith in a more productive manner. She could have been preachy and told her readers that they needed to experience their faith in the same manner that she does. About the author:
JoAnna Oblander is happily married to her husband of over thirty years, Dr. Greg Oblander. She is the mother of six children, two of whom were adopted from Russia. Though her two most important jobs have been wife and mother, she has also been involved in a variety of businesses, church leadership responsibilities, and youth organizations, and she has been the lead organizer of a large biennial women’s event. As a benefactor of many varied life and spiritual experiences, she has gained a strong conviction of the importance of knowing God and His true character. The knowledge and insights she has gained as a result of her experiences have taught her of the importance of gratefully recognizing, acknowledging, and developing our God-given capacities. Those experiences have instilled in her a strong desire to create an eternally meaningful life guided by God and has led her to seek a life that is in harmony emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Her greatest joys are being with her husband, children, and grandchildren and bringing health to others as she works with her husband in his chiropractic office.
