Paint Me Fearless
(Shady Gully #1)
By Hallie Lee
Christian Contemporary Fiction
Paperback, ebook & audiobook, 322 Pages
January 6, 2021 by WordCrafts Press

Although their petite appearances are strikingly similar, ROBIN and DESIREE (DESI) have little in common. When Desi moves to the small town of Shady Gully, Louisiana, the unpopular Robin feels diminished by the new girl's notoriety.

But fate has other ideas, and as these two isolated girls are drawn together, a friendship born in high school evolves into a bond that promises to last a lifetime. Even as their paths diverge, and they clumsily marry and plow through raising families of their own, they remain true.

Even as they nurse their respective bruises, and carry their traumas from childhood into their own marriages, they always have each other's backs. Even when a sordid secret from their past emerges to threaten their families, together...they remain a force to be reckoned with.

Until years later, when they're enjoying the prime of their lives, a stunning rumor surfaces that threatens their lifelong connection. The allegation suggests that one has betrayed the other.

Truth? Lie? Does it matter? Sometimes just the hint of betrayal is enough to ruin a lifelong bond.

As their worlds collide, and old insecurities rise to the forefront, the layers of Desi and Robin's legendary friendship begin to unravel.

Just when it seems they've lost everything, the truth brings them full circle...and in their brokenness they come to realize that there is only one true way to fill the emptiness inside, to quiet the lies...and to ultimately become...fearless.

(Robin)

When I heard the sporty guys tromping into class, I straightened my shirt over the roll around my belly. Converse shoes and flashes of blue and white everywhere, the junior high athletes liked to make an entrance. Lenny, the quarterback, headed straight for the window. Supposedly he had the talent to go varsity, whatever that meant.

He raised his arms, held up his imaginary gun, and shot a fluffy squirrel, who fluttered along the branch of an oak tree just outside the classroom window.

“Puuhhh. Puuhhh.” Gunshot sounds. Lenny nodded, pleased with his aim.

“Nailed him,” confirmed Ricky, his best friend.

The squirrel looked fine to me. In fact, he came closer to the window, twitched his tail, and chomped on an acorn while giving Lenny the eye.

“I’ma get me a few this weekend at my camp.” Mitch tugged at his blue-and-white letter jacket, winking at his friends. “Squirrels, I mean.”

I rolled my eyes. Mitch was some kind of back. Halfback, fullback, hunchback, I don’t know, but of all the sporty guys, I hated him the most. Number one, he wasn’t even cute or foxy. Number two, he always acted like he was in on some secret that you weren’t, as if you weren’t good enough to even imagine all the great things going on in his world. Like stupid hunting trips at some camp in the swamp. And number three, Mitch acted like this camp in the swamp was the playboy mansion, and he himself was the old perv guy kissing all the girls.

About the Author

Born and raised in Louisiana, most of Hallie Lee’s screenplays and novels are set in the south. Inspired by a landscape rich with cantankerous, salt of the earth folks, Hallie’s characters tend to be dramatic, but kind, and quirky, but smarter than they appear.

A move to the creative community of Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2005 gave her the opportunity to take up screenwriting. As her screenplays were recognized with awards and placements in various contests, she had the opportunity to learn from award winning talents like Kirk Ellis (The John Adams miniseries) and Ronnie Clemmer (A League of Their Own).

But alas, her heart is southern, and when she and her family made another move to Kentucky, it renewed her passion for writing novels. And southern story telling.

Paint Me Fearless is the first in The Shady Gully Series, a series which promises thought provoking, relatable journeys whose cast of characters tend to be ornery, but loveable.

It’s women’s literature. It’s book club fiction. It's faith based. It’s Hallie Lee.

Stars Every Where

Countless heavenly stars rock in the cosmos

Glamorous stars walk the earth for good cause.

Every where they reach for social worth

Stars every where delight of human growth

Through infinite universe that exists forever

Up in skies brighter and on earth glimmer,

To mark human lives for better and better

Gracious they are, stars appear every where.

As mysterious universe is subtle and endless

There could be time for galaxies to impress.

Leading human world into new progress

Fathoms of spirit generate legends to redress.

As microcosmic creatures inhibit on earth

Star lights come forth to unleash sound health.

Striving and tackling renewal of ethical wealth

Invincible stars would show up for moral rebirth.

As fountain of all lives and blossom of love

Stars reinvigorate themselves further to live.

As images of dreams and homages to believe

Stars every where shine out cures to relieve.

About the author:

The world and life in general was promising to me until I was 17 years in my native country of Ethiopia. While a high school student in 1974, the world around me came crashing down when communist military Junta took state power and soon started a killing spree, at times committing mass murder. This was very traumatizing and the start of Stalinist ‘Red Terror’ on the ground. It was bad enough to hate being in life. From this, I quickly learnt life in the world is about taking on adventures.

With six of my school friends and one of our teachers, we formed an alliance to take action against the Junta. With 2 years of preparation we had managed to inform the public and get the local police headquarters on our side. Then, in April 1976 we staged a rebellion without violence in Nekempte, provincial capital of Welega. The revolt was short-lived, nothing lost with little gain. Amidst media control of the Junta, the news of rebellion was heard across the country. After that, my friends and I vowed to individually take on challenges for democracy as a life-long mission. We split apart and I went underground. When the security situation became harsh, I left the country for Sudan.

Despite traumatizing news and the realities around me with the ‘Periods of Gloom and Doom’, I took refuge in reading classical poetry which became my long time passion.

After a long journey through ups and downs, I suffered a car accident in Sudan, and left Africa all together - migrating to Canada in 1990. Through my journey in life, I looked around for a drug of relief from grief and nostalgia. Poetry reading had become my choice for entertainment and to delete bad memories and traumas. Soon after I realized that positive poetry is as good as drugs, music and paintings are, I decided to write one and here I begin with World of Stars.

Read an exclusive excerpt from Life on Your Terms: How to Get What You Really Want by Tanya Russell

Are you ready to take charge of your life? It's never too late! Get started by reading this exclusive excerpt from Life on Your Terms: How to Get What You Really Want by Tanya Russell and then download your own copy. Follow the tour to read even more. Leave questions for the author along the way. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

What a shame it would be to come to the end of your life and look back and say, "That was it?"

Life on Your Terms is a practical blueprint for how to feel fulfilled while creating the life you imagine. No matter what situation you find yourself in today, there is a bright future waiting for you. Applying the skills and practices in this book will launch you to that place and beyond, faster than you ever imagined possible.

In this practical guidebook, the author compresses decades of lessons learned from her wins and failures as a businesswoman and single mother into actionable steps to achieve the life you truly desire. Once bankrupt but now financially free, her courage, faith and strong desire for something more for herself and her children have driven her to seek out ways to create exactly that.

Don't live the same day every day and call it a life. Apply these foundational principles and rewrite your future today.

Read an exclusive excerpt:
If we simply focus on creating great days, we will ultimately have a great life. A great day comes about by having good daily habits. Your habits determine your future. The results of your bad habits don’t usually surface until much later in life, so it’s important to start implementing positive ones right away.

Success Habit #1 – Get up Early

It’s only the beginning of chapter 2 and I’m probably scaring you off by talking about getting out of that cozy bed of yours at an awful hour, right? This tends to be the success habit that is the hardest for people to apply yet will likely get you the best results. I struggled as I learned to implement this habit myself. I was always the night owl … crawling into bed in the wee hours of the morning. But it didn’t take long for me to change my sleep patterns and start getting up with the sun. My internal alarm usually goes off around 4:54 am. Now, in all honesty, I don’t jump right out of bed at this time every day, but on the mornings, I do, my days are way more productive.

So why rise early? Research published in the journal Nature Communications shows that those who rise early tend to be happier, have an overall better quality of sleep and reduced stress levels. And a Texas University study found that students who are early risers tend to get overall higher grades. I believe this can be linked to overall higher productivity in those students and the same results could be expected for working individuals as well.

You may be asking, “How many people are awake at this time?” Next to none, you say? Exactly! That’s the benefit. There are no distractions. You have time to just focus on the important things. You begin conquering the world and your goals/tasks before anyone else even gets out of bed! You can use this early morning time to implement the remaining success habits listed below.

How often do we tell ourselves “I just don’t have the time” when we are making excuses for not doing the things we know we should be doing? We will discuss the valuable asset of time more in chapter 6, but if we can train ourselves to get up early, before the kids wake up or our phones go crazy or the demands of daily life begin, we can use these prime hours to be ultra-productive.

Christmas Comes to Morning Star by Charlotte Hubbard

Welcome to the book tour for Christmas Comes to Morning Star, the third installment of the absolutely delightful Morning Star Amish series by Charlotte Hubbard. Today I have an excerpt for you  as well as my thoughts on the book. And Charlotte is taking us into the lives of the twin heroines. Please let her know your thoughts and then be sure to follow the tour for even more. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

Founded by five unmarried and enterprising Amish maidels, the new Morning Star Marketplace in small-town Missouri is preparing for a joyous Christmas season. But will the holiday also bring unexpected tidings of love?

Twin sisters Molly and Marietta Helfing are eagerly anticipating Christmas, with Marietta fully recovered from cancer and their noodle making business thriving. But Molly clearly misses having former tenant Pete Shetler and his rambunctious dog, Riley, around. Marietta can’t ignore Molly’s feelings for Pete—or the anxiety it stirs within her. Convinced her illness has made her unmarriageable, Marietta wonders what kind of life she’ll have if her sister marries—despite Molly’s promise never to leave her behind. . .

Then a fire destroys the home of Amish neighbors and Molly and Marietta graciously make room for widower Glenn Detweiler, his dat, and his two young boys. When Pete returns to help the family rebuild, Molly relishes her reunion with the handsome carpenter, while Marietta delights in mothering Glenn’s boys—and is surprised by her poignant bond with their quiet, brooding father. Soon everyone is wondering if this season will bring the blessing of a merry double wedding to Morning Star . . .

Read an excerpt:
Pete cranked up his pickup, gunning the engine as he shot down the Helfings’ lane—and then he kicked himself. He was trying to act more mature, and driving like a clueless kid—he way he had when he’d lived in the twins’ dawdi haus—was not what he’d intended to do. But old habits died hard.

“Riley, we’ve gotta do better, boy,” he said as he slung his arm around the dog’s furry neck.

“Keep reminding me that Molly won’t take me seriously unless I turn over a lot of new leaves, will ya?”

Riley licked Pete’s face exuberantly. The dog loved to ride in the pickup every chance he got, and he’d been excited about returning to the twins’ place.

“Even though she and Marietta stick like glue, I have to admire the way Molly’s supported her sister,” Pete continued as he drove toward town. “Not many girls would’ve shaved their heads during Marietta’s chemo, knowing how that goes directly against the Ordnung! I love it that Molly broke the rules that way!”

When his dog’s eyes widened, Pete laughed.

“Uh-oh, I said that L word, didn’t I? Gotta watch that. Gotta toughen up my attitude,” he continued in a firmer voice. “Molly’s the bossiest girl I ever met—and there’s no prying those twins apart, anyway. So why act like I’m interested, right?”

Riley focused forward, gazing through the windshield as though he didn’t believe a word Pete had just said.

As always, the dog probably had it right.

**My thoughts**
I just love this series. Each charming book picks up right about where the previous one left off. And yet you don't even need to have read the others to understand what is going on in this specific story. The main focus is always on the couple-at-hand (or in this case, make that double), but there's just enough of an explanation of those already paired off to help you understand, without giving away too much information. That being said, I would still recommend reading them all at some point.

A lot has happened to our maidels in just a few short months. It's been fun watching their relationships grow. You just knew early on that Molly and Pete were going to fall for each other because of the way they bickered and picked one each other. It's just Pete has an awful lot of growing up to do in spite of his age. You just want to kick him so many times.

And you hope that Marietta can find love. It's hard enough to be an older Amish woman, let alone one who is now considered deformed and cannot bear children. She has a big heart and you just want to see her happy. And you want the twins to figure it out around the same time so that their separation doesn't lead to a long isolation, since they have been together their entire lives. Christmas is often a magical time, even in the Amish realm.

Glenn is a tough one. His previous behavior has left a lot of a bad taste in my mouth, though I understand why he has been such a mess. It's not fair that some people seem to take a bigger hit than others, though that often leads to the person growing into a better version of himself.

As with the previous books in this series, I was left with a warm and fuzzy feeling and plenty of smiles throughout. Now we just need to find out what is going to happen with Jo! And what is going to happen to the Marketplace when all of our maidels are settled in their new lives.

Read an excerpt from book 2: First Light in Morning Star

Molly and Marietta Helfing: A Day in the Life!

The twin heroines of CHRISTMAS COMES TO MORNING STAR follow a fairly predictable schedule from one day to the next—at least until heroes Pete Shetler and Glenn Detweiler come along to upset it! In the first two books of this Maidels of Morning Star series (MORNING STAR and FIRST LIGHT IN MORNING STAR) Molly and Marietta are carrying on their mother’s homemade noodle business in a small building behind their farmhouse—and they also have two dawdi hauses. Ordinarily a dawdi haus is built so the older generation can live there, but the Helfings have lost their parents, so they rent these small houses to tourists who come to Morning Star.

Ordinarily the twin sisters rise early, eat their breakfast, and go right out to the noodle factory. They make large batches of dough, run the dough through their rollers to flatten it into sheets, and then cut the sheets into strips so they can flatten the dough even more. Then they use knives to cut the noodles into whichever size they’re making that day. The noodles air-dry on screens, and then Molly and Marietta bag and label them so they’re ready to sell at their Marketplace shop on Saturdays. Meanwhile, they do their laundry and other housekeeping chores, raise a garden, etc. After her double mastectomy, Marietta feels no man will ever want a flat-chested woman who can’t bear kids, so she has resolved never to marry. Molly has vowed to remain single, as well, so Marietta won’t live alone…even though Molly secretly adores cute, blond carpenter Pete and his dog!

In earlier books, Pete Shetler lived in one of their dawdi hauses because his uncle, Bishop Jeremiah, believed he’d lead a more appropriate life and maybe be persuaded to join the Amish church. He and Molly are sweet on each other—trying not to admit it—so when Pete moves to his uncle’s place to remodel it, Molly’s life becomes a lot less exciting because he takes his rambunctious dog, Riley, with him.

Once CHRISTMAS COMES TO MORNING STAR gets going, however, it’s Glenn Detweiler who’s moving into a dawdi haus because his house burns down. He arrives with an elderly father, a seven-year-old son, and a newborn son because his mother and wife have died within the past six months. It’s December, and Marietta immediately realizes that warming bottles for a tiny baby on the hot plate in the little dawdi haus just won’t work—so the Helfing sisters’ usual schedule is disrupted in a BIG way by the arrival of four needy males!

As fate and faith would have it, Marietta becomes so attached to baby Levi and Billy Jay that her maternal instincts kick in—and Glenn is extremely grateful for her help. The twins even have Glenn’s elderly dad and Billy Jay helping them bag and label their noodles. Not once do they complain about the drop in their production because caring for the Detweilers takes so much of their time. The entire Amish community helps build—and completely furnish—a new home for this family. We also get to watch Billy Jay recite his verses of the Christmas story at the Christmas Eve program and share in his accomplishment.

CHRISTMAS COMES TO MORNING STAR is a romance, so of course both sisters get their happily-ever-after! But they don’t allow Pete or Glenn an easy time of it!

In 1983, Charlotte Hubbard sold her first story to True Story. She wrote around 70 of those confession stories, and she’s sold more than 50 books to traditional or online publishers. A longtime resident of Missouri, she’s currently writing Amish romances set in imaginary Missouri towns for Kensington. She now lives in Omaha, NE with her husband of 40+ years and their Border collie, Vera.

In Strategy Quest: The Executive Guide for Finding Business Opportunities, you will learn how to achieve the strategic mindset necessary to create and decide on the business opportunities that will put you ahead of your competition.

Using the psychology of personality type, you will understand how to make the shift to this growth mindset. In Strategy Quest, you will learn that the strategic mindset is composed of Strategic Intuition and Strategic Thinking. Strategic Intuition creates strategic visions and concepts, while strategic thinking decides if these are genuinely strategic and the right choice for your business.

Strategy Quest uses business examples to show what the strategic mindset is and isn’t. The book also equips you with the tools that you will need for your Strategy Quest and shows you how to overcome the obstacle that you might encounter.

Read an exclusive excerpt:
Unfortunately, there is a strong bias in business in favor of the tactical mindset that eschews intuition. As noted by University of Toronto Professor of Psychology, Dr. Jordan Peterson, “It’s a real conundrum . . . in most businesses the non-creative people are increasingly being replaced by machines . . . There is increasing demand in corporations for creative people, but the problem with being creative is that you are useless at the bottom of the dominance hierarchy. Because, at the bottom of the dominance hierarchy, you should do what you’re told to do, you’re not there to think outside the box; you are there to learn what you are supposed to do and implement it . . . that’s not how creative people work . . . Companies filter out all the creative people at the bottom, but creative people are needed at the top” (4). Recall that even Steve Jobs was weeded out of Apple until, twelve years later, the company realized that they needed his visionary leadership and reinstated him as CEO.

Using strategic intuition is an open-ended process with uncertain outcomes and to managers, may seem like a waste of time. Having problems to solve, things to approve, decisions to make, people to direct and deadlines to meet, managers tend to be task-oriented and schedule-driven. Many acquire a feeling of importance by having a full schedule of meetings, being very busy and in high demand.
To ensure that they meet their short-term objectives, many managers get involved in almost every issue, attend every meeting they can, and micromanage their staff. Their satisfaction is attained by checking off items on their to-do list and knowing every detail of what is happening in the business. Finding time for strategic leadership means finding ways to be less occupied with management activities. Leaders must prioritize and delegate work, eliminate low-value distractions, avoid micromanaging, and be selective with the meetings that they attend.

Unfortunately, the tactical orientation of management often results in actions that further reduce the time for finding strategic opportunities. In the hope of improving planning and execution, managers often increase their tactical focus. The result is increasing numbers of reports, meetings, performance metrics, and policies that result in more time spent managing and less time leading. Executives must be very careful about adding work and look for elegant solutions that don’t depend on more people doing more things that they must then manage.

Even though strategic thinking comes as close as possible to understanding whether a concept is a strategic opportunity, it doesn’t provide the certainty that managers seek for tactical planning and execution. The result is that many will struggle with a decision to move forward with truly strategic opportunities. They might even forgo these in the hope of finding certainty, but such opportunities do not exist.
