Marines Don't Cry: Delivering the Message at All Costs by Danny Garcia & Jackie C Garcia

Welcome to the book tour for Marines Don't Cry, a memoir by Danny Garcia and Jackie C. Garcia. You'll get a peek inside of their journey with an excerpt and a few interview questions. Be sure to follow the tour for even more. And then check out the great giveaway, which has multiple winners!

Have you ever been lost -- really lost?

Danny and Jackie answer this question in Marines Don’t Cry with stories of death to life, deep sorrow to joy, darkness to light, and freedom in Christ.

Danny recounts his early life in Spanish Harlem and describes conversion from a life of drugs and “the fast lane” to one consumed with knowing and serving God. This makes his journey of walking more than 52 million steps on six continents for children and world peace such an incredible story.

Marines Don’t Cry is about the transformational power of God’s love: how Danny found his calling and is delivering the message of Christ at all costs.

Read an excerpt:
Chapter 12: Walking for Children Around the World

“You Don’t Have Enough Bullets”

As we left the Arab village and continued toward Baghdad, the security patrol noticed something odd. In the distance, the guards saw large groups of people coming toward the caravan. About 20,000 people were walking toward us and were converging on us. The people were coming from both sides of the road. The military escort responsible for my safety became agitated and concerned. The crowds were not racing angrily toward us, but we were clearly outnumbered. Although the vehicles had automatic machine guns at the front and back of the caravan, I think the escorts were afraid.

“What shall we do, Mr. Garcia? They are coming!” the guards exclaimed.

“You don’t have enough bullets. Let them come,” I said.

As the crowd got closer, I could hear them singing. The caravan came to a stop. The guards were shocked. The people were in unison, in harmony, like a massive choir. The melody was beautiful.

“Why are they doing this? Why are they singing? Are they singing to me?” I asked.

“This is unbelievable,” said the guards. “They are singing to you! They are welcoming you.”

“Welcome,” they sang lovingly. “You are welcome!”

I absorbed the beauty of this moment and melted in their love for me. I smiled as the crowds joined the caravan. In unison, we continued forward into Baghdad. More than fifty TV cameras from around the world, including China, were waiting and recorded the entry into Baghdad. The sponsors made sure that all vehicles were removed from the main highway so that we were clear to walk. We walked up and over a bridge, the main bridge into the city of Baghdad, and thousands of people were flashing cameras in the daytime.

The city welcomed us. The Iraqi Olympians cried. Never had they been acknowledged with such a welcome.

In front of all the people was a little girl, maybe six years old. She stepped toward me and, looking up, raised a flower to give to me. I bent down to accept her flower. Then I picked her up, turned her around, and set her on my shoulder for the crowds to see this beautiful child. The people went wild and shouted with joy and happiness. My gesture was a message to the world:

“Everyone, see her! This is your child. I love her, you all should love her! She is who I care about. The children, we must protect them.”

Who are some of the people you have met that have influenced you most or were influential to you?

My Uncle Victor was like a father to me because he was always there for me and taught me how to be a man, how to fight, how to survive. He was my mentor, and I loved his stories of Golden Gloves Boxing and of the military. In our book, we wrote quite a bit about significant mentors at different times in my life. Bud Roberts of Shell Oil, during the Wood Stock era; General Krulak, USMC, during my time as a Marine in San Diego; and Mr. Alexander, Consulate General of Grenada to Mexico. But the person who has influenced me the most, is Jesus Christ. He saved me from eternal death and he gave a whole new life and purpose to share his love and redemption.

When did you realize that you had a connection with God?

That’s a deep question. In my early years when I was in Catholic school, the clergy and teachers taught me about God. But I really did not know him, not as Lord, not as Savior. When I was 33 years old and had a life and death experience. My spirit left my body, and knew I was dying, and I knew that I was destined for hell because of the life of sin I had been living. Only when I screamed, “Jesus, save me!” did I know that he touched me and allowed me to live. When I said those words, I was crying out for salvation of both my body and spirit.

Were you afraid when you called out to God?

Oh yes, I was afraid I would physically die. All my life, prior to this time, I was always a winner, always the best athlete, always the best gang negotiator. I was well-liked and successful. I was a competitor. But when the concoction of drugs in my system took over, I was truly afraid for the first time in my life. My experiences in Spanish Harlem, Vietnam, police and prison work did not compare to the fear I felt at that moment. I was helpless as I faced death.

How does one know if/when they have a connection with a God?

I have never been the same since that moment when my spirit returned to my body. There was a peace I had never experienced, a freedom, a salvation. My living became living for Christ. How can you know? All I can say it that it is a personal experience between you and your creator. I became a new person – I did not act the same, speak the same, think the same as before. I was transformed and knew it deep down in my soul. There comes a time when you cannot ignore God – he always wins.

The Light Through the Pouring Rain by James Ruvalcaba

Cancer sucks, no matter how you cut it, and it can leave a path of destruction in its wake. The Light Through the Pouring Rain is one couple's story of this devastating diagnosis and their journey with love and faith. Take a peek inside with an excerpt and then read author James Ruvalcaba's thoughts on turning his story into a movie. Share your stories and ask questions in the comments section as you follow the tour. Best of luck entering the giveaway!

An emotional page turner that gives a first hand look into the lives of a young couple madly in love and eager to start their lives together, only to have it all halted by a cancer diagnosis. With no clear road map on how to navigate their new normal, James and Anabel proceed into uncharted territory, hand-in-hand, with the love of their families and their faith in God to guide them.

Read an excerpt:

At this time, I was working with special needs kids as an instructional aide. My work schedule was eight thirty a.m. to three p.m., typical school hours. Thanks to my mom, I was able to have some sort of income to take care of Anabel’s needs when she needed something. It wasn’t much, but it was something. Prior to leaving work, I gave her a speech: “Chemo ain’t got shit on you. It chose the wrong person to fuck with.” I felt like I was giving a speech in 300. She was amped, we kissed each other goodbye, and I was off to work. Later on at work, I got a text from my mom sending me a picture of Anabel during chemo, and she was all smiles with a thumbs-up. She looked way happier than anybody in that situation could possibly be, but she felt in her heart that chemo didn’t have shit on her. That was partially my fault for the speech I gave her in the morning, but it was funny to see somebody actually believe the words you say and run with it. I cracked a smile, thinking, This girl.

I arrived home at three thirty. “Bells!”

“Yes, Meez?”

“How did it go?”

“It was a breeze.”

My mom explained the doctor’s orders and the game plan. Eight weeks of chemo, five days a week, which would be re-evaluated as needed until her tumor was small enough to do radiation, then surgery to remove it. We were all excited. The plan has been laid out, and with a plan that has a time frame, you are able to envision the light at the end of the tunnel, because the next day brings you that much closer to back to your normal life. Anabel and I smiled at each other with our eyes tearing up. We must’ve both been imagining our lives going back to normal.

If my book was a movie it would be a dream as well as a nightmare, let me explain.

I know every Author believes their books can be made into a movie and that is one of the ultimate goals we all have in mind. Even me as well. My reason for my book to be made into a movie is to spread awareness of cancer and give a truly in-depth look into the horrors of it. I believe everybody has an understanding of the basics of what goes into cancer diagnosis ( balding, weight loss, chemotherapy ) but how about the emotions? How about maintaining relationships with the ones you love and being able for both partners in the relationship to feel loved? There are just so many layers to the book and the story that it can have an impact on so many. I know it impacts many and I know it will.

On the other hand, there is a major negative to making my book into a movie and it’s not what you may think it is. My negative reason would be to have to relive the horrors of the moments that hurt me most. I will not be excited to have to relive most of the moments over again. Every time I would see particular scenes it would be like ripping a bandage off a freshly open wound. It would hurt, but I understood the bigger picture of my book and story. I would suck it up because I would know the greater good of my story and how it can impact others to appreciate what you have and to appreciate the ones you love.

When my book gets made into a movie, I will look back at this post because this is one of the first public platforms where I have stated that my book will be a movie one day and one day soon.

Review of Song of Sugar Sands by Debra Coleman Jeter

Welcome to the review tour for Song of Sugar Sands by Debra Coleman Jeter. This is the second book in the series. I reviewed the first book, Joy After Noon, over at Andi's Book Reviews. Today I have an excerpt for you and then I'm sharing my thoughts on this book. Follow the tour to find out what others thought of this book as well.

Song of Sugar Sands

A deeply committed young man falls in love with the beautiful but troubled Acadia, who knows herself too selfish, too sinful, and too skeptical in her faith to marry a preacher.

Acadia Powers nearly lost her faith at an early age due to what she saw as the hypocrisy of her parents’ generation. In college—where the novel begins—she meets and falls in love with Peter O’Neil, who is fervent in his faith and wants to share the good news with the world. Despite serious doubts about her ability to survive as a preacher’s wife, Acadia finally agrees to marry Peter. The two embark with high hopes on a new life in Sugar Sands, Alabama, where Acadia takes a position as a high school teacher while Peter becomes pastor of a small church. SONG OF SUGAR SANDS recounts Acadia’s struggle to come to terms with issues of faith, while also telling the story of Peter and Acadia’s falling in love and the traumatic first year of their marriage. When one of her students attempts suicide after confiding her problems in Acadia, and a new friend and mentor, Beatrice Wood, reveals that she has terminal cancer, Acadia almost quits. Can she reach deep enough inside, or beyond herself, to find what she needs to keep on trying, or has she made too many mistakes already?

Read an excerpt:
I stand at the edge of the water, a deep aqua today, as I listen to the waves crash onto the shore. I think back to all the times I’ve stood here, all the moods we’ve shared this past year, the gulf and I. Times when I was saying goodbye, convinced I could not survive another day in this life, in this place. Times when the water drew me in, embraced me, caressed and comforted me. And times like today when I gaze in awe at the magnificence of the vast waters before me, at their power and the power of their maker.

A girl crystallizes before my eyes, rising like a mermaid from the water. That girl would never, in a million years, have believed that Acadia Powers, at the ripe age of twenty-four, would find herself in this position. Not only in this position, but actually grateful to be here. That girl would have been appalled. For an instant I can see her and feel her as vividly as if that time were yesterday, the scene in my head as real and as near as the sand beneath my feet.

**My thoughts**
It's so hard to date someone whose faith is so different from your own. Peter is deeply devoted to his faith, aspiring to become a pastor as soon as he can. Cadi has some faith but has found herself slipping away from it over the years and simply cannot comprehend how Peter can feel the way that he does. She is so lost in general, that I felt like she just kind of gave in to marrying Peter because she knew he was sincere in his feelings for her and would provide for her. I know that she says that she is in love with him, but it feels more like she is in love with an idea of him instead of him for who he really is.

As you're reading the book, it definitely has a slow burn and a detachment that reflects how Cadi is feeling in her life as she is telling her story. She wants to do right by her students, as a preacher's wife, and in her marriage, but isn't sure which direction to turn. And because she is struggling with her faith, the last place she feels like turning is to God. She really wants Peter to see her, acknowledge her, but he is so wrapped up in his new church, which is having difficulty growing and moving into more modern times (in this book, the late 1970s/early 1980s). Keep in mind the time period as you read this book and some situations play out.

I think this book is going to speak to people who have struggled with their faith over the years, because they will recognize their own struggles in Cadi's story, even if they handled it differently.

Thank you to the author and Goddess Fish for providing me an Advanced Review Copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Excerpt

At first, she thought she was just seeing things. Another appeared, and then another. Laci looked up and smiled, then closed her eyes and tilted her head back so she could catch them in her mouth as they fell. She felt like a little kid and wanted to spin around but knew her body wasn’t really up for that. The flakes grew larger, falling faster and faster and her face was now wet from the melted snow. When she opened her eyes however, the few soft snowflakes had turned into flurries, a veritable snowstorm in a few short minutes. She gasped with delight. “Let it snow!” She yelled with joy, holding out her hands and walking around in circles. It reminded her of a day, not long ago, when she had danced in the rain and asked God to heal her cancer.

“It’s snowing!” Travis yelled, running to the window. “Can I go outside with mom?” He asked.

Mitch raised his eyebrow. “What are you talking abou—?”

Mitch turned to the window and saw Laci standing in the snow.

“What in the world is that woman doing?”

Immediately, he tore out the back door.

“Laci Jean!” He shouted as he ran down the deck stairs toward her.

“It’s snowing, Mitch! It’s really snowing!” She shouted with excitement and turned toward him, but as she did her foot slipped on the snow-covered grass. Her legs gave way.

“LACI!”

Natashia Brewer, author of Biblical Proportions, on Her Journey to Becoming a Writer

*******************

For many years, I knew that I wanted to write a book. Unfortunately, I didn’t know about what. I knew that whatever I wrote it had to be thought provoking and inspiring. It wasn’t until I found myself in the darkest time in my life that I discovered myself and many topics to write about.

In January 2017, not only was I separated from my husband, but I also lost my job. These two things were such a significant part of me that I didn’t know who I was without them. I mean they both were in my life for over 20 years. I found myself in the lowest point of my life, but I knew that I couldn’t stay in that place. I had to get free not just for me but for my two children, so I had to find out who Natashia Brewer was. I took time and created a process to allow me to heal. Since I am also a songwriter, I titled my process Finding Life’s Love Song. The process made me dig deep and deal with all the baggage that was inviting drama and pain into my daily life.

Once I completed the process and felt completely free, I knew that I could not keep it to myself but didn’t know how to share it with the world. One night in a dream, I received the God given idea to write my first book titled Love Song. The book not only explores the life of a very successful business women, but it also incorporates part of the process to Finding Life’s Love Song.

Since writing Love Song, I was later divinely given the idea for my new book titled Biblical Proportions which I finished writing in October 2017. However, I knew it was not the time to release it. I prayed about it and guided to release the book for such a time as this. The book was released on May 11, 2018. Biblical Proportions is a modern-day parable, inspired by the story of Esau and Jacob. It is a powerful fictional tale that will take readers inside the drama of twin brothers Edward and James which threaten to destroy them. I made sure to illustrate the perils brought about by sinful choices, but also share insights and guidance on how they rebound from devasting consequences through faith and a deeper relationship with God.

When I read through both books, I see some of the drama and pain that I have endured in my life in the pages. I worked hard to develop a closer relationship with God, and I can say that now I am truly free. I recognize that everything that happened, they happened for a reason. The storms that I endured, especially over the last two years, where not meant to hurt me. These situations, pain, and tears ultimately pushed me into purpose. My purpose is to motivate and inspire people through my work; songs, books, spoken word or music.

Biblical Proportions

Edward and James Shaw are twins who are successful executives at Rock Star Records. The company that was started and operated by their father, Irvin, who is a well-known hip hop artist. Edward has a great love for music and is focused on ensuring the success of the business, just like his dad. James on the other hand has a great love for women and power.

Unfortunately, they were blindsided by the challenges of life which were of biblical proportions. Edward found himself in the struggle of his life to save his marriage and his career after there had been some horrible choices made, while James found himself fighting for his freedom.

The only way for them to find their way through the drama, infidelity, damaged trust, addiction, meaningless sex, and betrayal was to build a solid relationship with God. When Edward and James hit rock bottom mentally and emotionally, they found out who they were and what the Lord called them to do. They both began to walk into their purpose realizing that although the storms came one after another, after another and almost took them out; they survived through the grace of God…

Take this journey with Edward and James and the rest of the Shaw family as they endure the many trials and tribulations of this life.

Read an excerpt:
“Well if that is how you going to be, then how do you think Jackie is going to feel when she finds out what we have been doing together all this time. How together is your happy family going to be then?” Rita threatened.

This statement infuriated James to his core.

Life Lesson Four: What’s done in the dark will eventually come to light because buried bones won’t stay hidden always. Although people agree to a situation where they are on the “side”, it doesn’t mean that they won’t eventually catch feelings and forget their position.

Thoughts: Meditations for Your Spiritual Walk by Brandon Champney

Thoughts: Meditations for Your Spiritual Walk

Join me on a spiritual journey as I share tidbits of thought on topics such as Faith, Hope, Love, Vision, Trust, Success, Spirit, Possibility in Thoughts, Meditations for Your Daily Spiritual Walk. We can all use insight and depth of understanding to feed our soul and spirit, helping us on whatever path to enlightenment we find ourselves. In a world which tries to deplete, on a daily basis, our spiritual reserves, it is good to fill oneself up. However, one can.

Each topic filled with helpful and encouraging insight lifts up and inspires, rejuvenating one's inner being with a fresh outlook on life. What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? What price can we put on the needs we have as spiritual beings to transcend the seen to realms in which we soar on wings like eagles and plant our feet firmly on mountain tops.

Read an excerpt:
The change will come when your vision overshadows the force which keeps you from moving forward and changing. When the vision for your life is greater than your momentary desires, you will change. You have spent your life acting on your desires, make your vision, your desire, and you will act on it. The thing is to allow that vision to grow, to plant it within and water it. A vision for a better life, to see things new, to cast off the things which entangle.

The goal is to come to believe so firmly in the vision. Don't get down on yourself. Don't focus on the moment whether you happen to think you are doing well or not doing so good, set it aside. Keep building the vision within you and you will naturally and comfortably make the small changes which bring about significant changes. If you create the view for yourself, your actions will follow. You will increasingly not want to do things which jeopardize your vision. It is all a matter of time, it is inevitable, your desire will burn inside you. Fuel the flame and you will achieve what you believe. Don't look at where you are at the moment it doesn't matter, look rather to where you are going.

Nurture within you the best vision for your life; your mind can imagine. Imagine how it will feel to be on this journey. Make it increasingly clear within your mind's eye. Imagine how it will be to love and to be loved; to have joy and peace and real lasting happiness. To have self-control and determination, to not judge yourself or others, to have a real purpose and meaning in your life. To feel confident and truly believe in the things you hold dearest to your heart. To extinguish all the flaming darts life throws at you. To have a growing faith which shines. Dream; the universe is open to you.

Remember when you were a child, and you couldn't wait for the next day. When you woke, you jumped out of bed and ran to do the thing you wanted to do. Wouldn't it be great even to have a portion of it back into your life, where you look forward to where your life is going? Life can beat you down to the point you feel stuck. Where you feel nothing will ever change. Envision a new life, one in which the possibilities are endless, and you have it within you to grab hold of it and make it yours. Open your eyes wide, take a deep breath, watch the sunrise on a new day, smile, you will renew your strength. You will mount up with wings like eagles. You will run and not get tired; you will walk and not grow weary. Isaiah 40:31

#BookBlast 'Doomed Soul' by Robert Boomsliter

doom soul tour banner

Doomed Soul A man without faith shares his views as the end of life approaches. The views are reflections on religion, morality and death. The deeply religious will find little of interest here and may find some of the material incomprehensible. Some moderates who have noticed twinges of doubt or discomfort in certain beliefs may find some explanations for those feelings.

The faithless will probably understand it all. It is the author's hope that for them, it will be a pleasant read.

About the author:

Robert - Doomed SoulI am a retired electrical engineer, my career of 41 years spent mostly in Silicon Valley, California. I was one of those extremely fortunate individuals who enjoyed their work so much that it seemed unfair that I should be paid to perform it.

My profession required some technical writing but I never aspired to author anything that would be interesting to the general reader. Doomed Soul is my first attempt to do so and I hope that its introduction is a clear explanation why I chose to do it.

I currently live in Florida with my wife Babs and two bichon frise dogs named Boomer and Gabby.

Review of 'Fractured, Not Broken (A Memoir)' by Kelly Schaefer with Michelle Weidenbenner

Fractured Tour Banner

Fractured-KINDLEA Real Life Story of Heroic Virtue

Parts of this memoir appeared on ESPN and in Rosie

Warsaw, Indiana
July 08, 2015

Award-winning and best-selling author, Michelle Weidenbenner, announces the release of Kelly Schaefer’s memoir, Fractured Not Broken.

Years ago, parts of Kelly’s story appeared on ESPN and in Rosie, but now Kelly reveals the rest of the story in her new book, Fractured Not Broken.

Nineteen-year-old Kelly had it all—a healthy and athletic body, a star basketball-player boyfriend, and a fun college life with close friends.

But everything changed when a drunk driver rendered her a quadriplegic.

Kelly was left with arms and legs that couldn’t move. She couldn’t walk, write, feed herself or comb her hair. When she thought she couldn’t lose anything more—her boyfriend left her, unwilling to endure a life with a quad.

Through her darkest days of loss and pain, her family and community gathered together to push her forward, to help her persevere. With their help, Kelly moved closer to God and toward a faith she’d never had.

“Miracles come in many obscure moments,” Kelly said. “I spent most of my life awaiting my big break. I expected my miracle to be in the form of a pill, injection, or surgery that would enable my spine to heal and give me the mobile freedom I prayed for, but that didn’t happen.

Kristen Jongen’s quote says it all:
“‘My miracle came unannounced, and in an odd package. It looked different from what I imagined--untimely, unexpected, unpretentious--yet it fit perfectly. Divinely constructed solely for me.’"

Fractured Not Broken is a memoir of loss and faith, but it’s also a love story that sounds like fiction.

“Life has its tragic moments of defeat, setbacks, and fracturing for everyone. Kelly's story proves, however, that individual momentum, personal progress, and genuine achievement can still be attained. Her courage and optimism are uplifting. Open these pages and experience the joy of ultimate victory.” —Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, Author of Jesus in All Four Seasons

“This book has been a true encouragement to me. Thank you Kelly for sharing your story— the loss and the unexpected joy— so that each reader can be uplifted knowing there is a full, rich life available to those who lean in to our Lord Jesus.” —Renee Bondi, Award-Winning Singer and Songwriter

“This is a real life story of heroic virtue—especially of courage, humility, and generosity—a triumph of faith, hope and love. This story involves the very essence of the human spirit, family, and community. To know Kelly and her journey of miracles is to know that with God all things are possible.” —Most Reverend Charles C. Thompson Bishop of Evansville

This book will fracture the paradigms of the goals and expectations we set for ourselves and others. Kelly’s words will change how readers think of people with disabilities and bring hope to readers who have lost faith in finding true love. Weidenbenner’s other novels include Cache a Predator, Scattered Links, and an early chapter book series for girls called Éclair.

Kelly is a teacher, speaker, Young Life mentor and a Skittles lover. She brings fun to her classroom and inspires others every day with her faith and positive attitude.

Michelle, her aunt, feels blessed to be the one to write and share Kelly’s story. Although this is Michelle’s first nonfiction project, it was heart-felt inspired like her novels.

**My thoughts**

You never know what you are going to get with a memoir. Some are well-written; others, not so much. I have read most of Michelle Weidenbenner's fiction, though, so I was willing to give this one a shot. It was well worth every moment.

Most of the story is told from Kelly's point of view. She feels free to let all of her emotions and thoughts pour out: the good, the bad, and the ugly. You get a very good sense of how she was feeling with every triumph and every pitfall along the way. Her story is so heartbreaking. I cannot even begin to fathom being out with friends one minute, and being a quadriplegic the next. To have all of those dreams shattered. And it isn't just her life that is affected. Her whole family. Her boyfriend. Her friends. The driver. The other passengers. That man's one bad decision cost so many people so much.

It's no wonder that her faith was so strongly tested. If I had faith like that, mine would also be tested. She comes back to it, slowly but surely, as she struggles to reclaim her life. Her stubbornness and determination to do something with her life in spite of all of her challenges is incredible. Where most people would shut down, she somehow found the strength to open herself back up.

I'm not saying that the whole back is happy go-lucky and that Kelly is riding around on magical rainbows. It's actually quite sad. There's a true roller coaster ride along her journey. Not all of it is pleasant. You're going to get choked up, if not completely crying, through many parts of the story, both happy and sad. You're going to feel frustrated and inspired. It could also force you to take a good look at yourself in the mirror. If a quadriplegic can do all of this, why can't you?

I also loved how Kelly challenges you to look differently at people with disabilities. I have friends in wheelchairs. I have friends with other special needs, or perhaps their children have special needs. I teach young children, many of whom have special needs. But every time you hear about life from the point-of-view of a disabled person, it challenges your thoughts and actions. You think you are starting to understand, but really you can't. She provides another voice that needs to be heard.

A good share of the book focuses on Kelly's relationship with God. Some people may be turned off by some of this, but it is an essential part of her story. It also isn't preachy. She isn't telling you that you need to join this church NOW to get yourself healed. She is simply sharing how her relationship impacted her journey. Whether or not you have a strong relationship with God, I think you can get a lot out of Kelly's story. It's well-written. It's interesting. It's emotional. It's just good.

Review of 'MS Madness' by Yvonne Desousa

MSmadnessbanner

mscover-halfYvonne deSousa’s diagnosis of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis came with an insightful declaration from a new doctor (“MS Sucks”) and a brother’s helpful advice (“You could totally get one of those handicapped parking plates now”).

What followed was a year of MS-adventures: “accidentally” kicking an officious male doctor in the crotch, becoming an undercover agent to pay for medication made from Chinese hamster ovary cells, discovering the amazing effects of legal speed, and battling her arch-nemesis, the dreaded food group-vegetables.

Throughout her MS journey, Yvonne learned how to use humor to find acceptance in her diagnosis and how to smile in the face of chronic illness. Life with multiple sclerosis can be daunting, but Yvonne shares her giggles at the bizarre world she has unwittingly entered and the new perspectives it has given her on life. MS Madness! makes us realize that with a sense of humor, we can survive anything.

“MS Madness! A ‘Giggle More, Cry Less’ Story of Multiple Sclerosis combines defiance with humor, the secret weapon of the sick. Laughter has carried me a greater distance than conventional medicine ever will. In the end, attitude drives well being.” -Richard M. Cohen, NY Times best-selling author of Blindsided and Strong at the Broken Places

**My thoughts**

"That's such a serious disease! How can you laugh at it?"

I often hear these words when I am poking a bit of fun at Alzheimer's, which runs rampant in my family. I hear it directed towards those friends and family who suffer from MS, cancer, and all kinds of other horrible diseases. My question is, how can you not?

When going through numerous personal issues that could have beaten me down and made me want to give up, I chose to take the higher road. I started to look for the positives in every single moment and even chose to laugh. I learned this from my own family and try to teach others to do so. This book is a perfect example of how to find the humor in life, even when dealt a crummy set of cards. We've all been there. It's our reactions to the situations that may differ.

Yvonne takes her diagnosis quite seriously. She acknowledges that she had never before really understood MS, though her own sister had already been diagnosed several years before. More than one form exists. Even then, as with all other ailments, each person is going to have her own set of symptoms and reactions, requiring different treatments, all falling under this umbrella called MS. The fundamentals and general aspects are the same, just individually tweaked for each person. This book provides enough of the basics for some general understanding of the disease, as well as lots of insight into her own personal struggles.

You ride the roller coaster with her, feeling her confusion, the pain, the exhaustion, the madness. Usually you laugh along with her, though you may have a tear or two in some spots. You will feel her faith shine through, whether it's faith in herself or faith in a higher power. You want to wish her well and hope that other friends and family that you know who have MS can also try to find some humor and happiness in their own horrible situation. I recommend this to anyone who either suffers from or knows someone who has MS. You will recognize people you know and love within her words. Even if you don't have MS, you may also find yourself within her story. I know I did.

Thank you, Yvonne, for sharing your story.

Author Bio
yvonneYvonne deSousa has worked as a street sweeper, a shell seller, a babysitter, a candy peddler, and a guest house manager, all before the age of sixteen. Later on she worked as a waitress, sales clerk, library assistant, victim’s advocate, and at the front desk of a doctor’s office.

Two years before Yvonne’s diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, a relative volunteered her to write an article for a local newspaper. Little did she know it was the beginning of a writing career. When MS threatened to turn her into a lunatic, she started writing more frequently and quickly discovered that writing about the insanity that is MS was helping to keep her sane.

Her work has appeared on CapeWomenOnline.com, and in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Finding My Faith and Something On Our Minds, Volumes 1 and 2. Yvonne also writes a weekly blog on www.yvonnedesousa.com the website that uses a giggle stick to beat up on MS. Since finishing MS Madness! A “Giggle More, Cry Less” Story of Multiple Sclerosis, she has started presenting programs designed to help others use humor to help cope with chronic illness.

Yvonne enjoys writing, laughing, and resting. She lives by her personal mottos, “how you deal affects how you feel” and “my MS is not your MS and your MS is weird!”
