'Andrew Murray: Destined to Serve' by Olea Nel FREE 10/29-10/30

For those who love Historical Fiction about Christian heroes of the faith

Historically accurate, and based upon Andrew Murray's letters and early biographies

A boyish and fun-loving Andrew Murray arrives back in South Africa after being ordained at the Hague on his twentieth birthday. He soon discovers that his preaching lacks the power displayed by his heroes of the faith. He therefore decides to embark on a quest to become a powerful preacher filled with the Holy Spirit.

But not long after his appointment as pastor to the Dutch emigrants beyond the borders of the Cape, he finds that he is being shunted off course by a frenetic round of preaching tours that sap his energy and leave him little time to spend with God. He also finds himself having to cope with an overly demanding church council, as well as walk a tightrope between the Boer farmers and the British Settler community who are bent on land speculation to the detriment of neighbouring tribes.

Feeling overwhelmed by the task, and knowing that he was pressed into taking it, he starts to doubt his calling. It does not take him long to realize that he has to either man-up or bow out.

WALK with Andrew Murray as he negotiates his first year of ministry to the Voortrekkers in the Orange River Sovereignty and the Transvaal between the years 1849 and 1850.

PLACE yourself with him in the wilds of Africa teaming with game, lions and African wolves.

THROW into this mix the British, who at the Battle of Boomplaats in 1848 have just taken over the land between the Orange and Vaal Rivers.

IMMERSE yourself in a world where the Boer is forever ready to rebel against their British overlords, and where Paramount Chief Moshesh of the Basuto is constantly threatening war against the British and neighbouring tribes.

OBSERVE how Andrew Murray at twenty-one is able to straddle the divide between Boer and Brit and grow into his role as lone pastor, eager to serve his far-flung congregation of over 20 000 souls.

Motherlode is a collection of essays examining eye-opening, poignant, brutally honest accounts of parenting. Essays on bittersweet empty nests, children lost to mental illness, and broken child-parent relationships all share one strong element in common. Despite the challenges of parenthood, the writers have a deep abiding love and appreciation for their children.

'Among the Giants' by Jesse LeBeau

Among the Giants: How One Underdog Pursued His Dreams & You Can Too!

by Jesse LeBeau

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The sound of the basketball slapping the floor echoed hollowly in the gym, as I began working it playfully with my hands. Planning my next move, I locked eyes with my opponent. I noticed small beads of sweat beginning to form in the furrow between his eyebrows. My heart was pounding, and my nerves tightened in response . . . but slowly a smile formed on my lips. Here I was, 5’8” Jesse LeBeau, going one on one with basketball superstar Kevin Durant . . . and I was making him sweat! As I started to make my move on him, I briefly wondered, "How did a skinny kid from a small town in Alaska ever get the chance to do this?" Here I was, involved in the filming of the 2012 Warner Brother's basketball movie Thunderstruck, playing against the NBA scoring champion! It shouldn't have happened. I didn't fit the profile and anyone would have told you that. But I did make it, despite the odds. And here is my story . . .
Growing up as an undersized white basketball player on a remote island in Alaska, Jesse had nearly every chip stacked against him. Yet despite his size and circumstances, he managed to rise above it all and make it to the big screen in Hollywood. With only the love of the game of basketball and the tenacity to follow a dream driving him, Jesse’s persistence has led him to star in national commercials and movies with some of the most recognizable celebrities and professional athletes in the world. More importantly, he found a way to tweak the system and alter his dream and get paid to do what he loves to . . . every day! Be inspired by his story and learn the keys to successfully creating a life that is uniquely yours.
Read an excerpt:
You probably aren’t going to like this, and maybe you won’t even agree with me, but i’m here to tell you this today: if you aren’t happy with your life, it’s your own fault. we all possess the ability to create the life we want. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, and make your life what you want it to be. Stop blaming other people. Stop making excuses. imagine if you took that wasted time and energy and used it to change your circumstances and fix the things you don’t like. what kind of life would you have then? i’d be willing to bet it would be a lot better. The highest achievers don’t blame others and make excuses. They don’t expect someone else to make them happy, and they don’t have a sense of entitlement and expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. They make it happen. They start taking different action steps to get different results. This attitude is what makes all the difference between those who are great and live happy lives and those who don’t.
There is only one person who is responsible for the quality of your life, and you guessed it: that person is you. everything that is happening in your life is the result of your previous actions or lack thereof. That makes you the grand master in charge of the current state of your life. our human nature conditions us to blame external factors that are out of our control to give us a scapegoat. But the truth of the matter is, it all comes back to how we choose to respond to each event that determines our outcome. like i mentioned before, we can’t always control the things that happen to us; the only thing we have the power to control is our attitude and how we choose to respond. The choice is yours. Take charge of your life. Think better thoughts. Visualize more positive outcomes. Take the action necessary to get what you want. This will determine everything for you and your life. Stop wasting your time being unhappy. choose wisely, and take 100 percent ownership for your life.
Review of 'MS Madness' by Yvonne Desousa
MSmadnessbanner
mscover-halfYvonne deSousa’s diagnosis of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis came with an insightful declaration from a new doctor (“MS Sucks”) and a brother’s helpful advice (“You could totally get one of those handicapped parking plates now”).
What followed was a year of MS-adventures: “accidentally” kicking an officious male doctor in the crotch, becoming an undercover agent to pay for medication made from Chinese hamster ovary cells, discovering the amazing effects of legal speed, and battling her arch-nemesis, the dreaded food group-vegetables.
Throughout her MS journey, Yvonne learned how to use humor to find acceptance in her diagnosis and how to smile in the face of chronic illness. Life with multiple sclerosis can be daunting, but Yvonne shares her giggles at the bizarre world she has unwittingly entered and the new perspectives it has given her on life. MS Madness! makes us realize that with a sense of humor, we can survive anything.
“MS Madness! A ‘Giggle More, Cry Less’ Story of Multiple Sclerosis combines defiance with humor, the secret weapon of the sick. Laughter has carried me a greater distance than conventional medicine ever will. In the end, attitude drives well being.” -Richard M. Cohen, NY Times best-selling author of Blindsided and Strong at the Broken Places
**My thoughts**
"That's such a serious disease! How can you laugh at it?"
I often hear these words when I am poking a bit of fun at Alzheimer's, which runs rampant in my family. I hear it directed towards those friends and family who suffer from MS, cancer, and all kinds of other horrible diseases. My question is, how can you not?
When going through numerous personal issues that could have beaten me down and made me want to give up, I chose to take the higher road. I started to look for the positives in every single moment and even chose to laugh. I learned this from my own family and try to teach others to do so. This book is a perfect example of how to find the humor in life, even when dealt a crummy set of cards. We've all been there. It's our reactions to the situations that may differ.
Yvonne takes her diagnosis quite seriously. She acknowledges that she had never before really understood MS, though her own sister had already been diagnosed several years before. More than one form exists. Even then, as with all other ailments, each person is going to have her own set of symptoms and reactions, requiring different treatments, all falling under this umbrella called MS. The fundamentals and general aspects are the same, just individually tweaked for each person. This book provides enough of the basics for some general understanding of the disease, as well as lots of insight into her own personal struggles.
You ride the roller coaster with her, feeling her confusion, the pain, the exhaustion, the madness. Usually you laugh along with her, though you may have a tear or two in some spots. You will feel her faith shine through, whether it's faith in herself or faith in a higher power. You want to wish her well and hope that other friends and family that you know who have MS can also try to find some humor and happiness in their own horrible situation. I recommend this to anyone who either suffers from or knows someone who has MS. You will recognize people you know and love within her words. Even if you don't have MS, you may also find yourself within her story. I know I did.
Thank you, Yvonne, for sharing your story.
Author Bio
yvonneYvonne deSousa has worked as a street sweeper, a shell seller, a babysitter, a candy peddler, and a guest house manager, all before the age of sixteen. Later on she worked as a waitress, sales clerk, library assistant, victim’s advocate, and at the front desk of a doctor’s office.
Two years before Yvonne’s diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, a relative volunteered her to write an article for a local newspaper. Little did she know it was the beginning of a writing career. When MS threatened to turn her into a lunatic, she started writing more frequently and quickly discovered that writing about the insanity that is MS was helping to keep her sane.
Her work has appeared on CapeWomenOnline.com, and in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Finding My Faith and Something On Our Minds, Volumes 1 and 2. Yvonne also writes a weekly blog on www.yvonnedesousa.com the website that uses a giggle stick to beat up on MS. Since finishing MS Madness! A “Giggle More, Cry Less” Story of Multiple Sclerosis, she has started presenting programs designed to help others use humor to help cope with chronic illness.
Yvonne enjoys writing, laughing, and resting. She lives by her personal mottos, “how you deal affects how you feel” and “my MS is not your MS and your MS is weird!”
'Bobby the Bobolink Helps to Rescue His Proud Friend' by Charissa Tinsley
Book blurb:
Children's books : "Bobby the Bobolink Helps To Rescue His Proud Friend",( Illustrated Picture Book for ages 3-10.) Teaches children the power of kindness and friendship. (Great for Beginner readers) (Bedtime story) The first book in the “Shared Values Collection.”
Read an excerpt:
Every duck in the colony had only the thought of getting ready and winning the beauty pageant on its mind. However, the bobolinks did not think being beautiful, popular, or gaining admiration from others was important. They loved their friends, and preferred to have them over so they could tell them that Jesus loves each one of them too. The ducks thought Bobby Bobolink was a little eccentric, because he connected with extremely unacceptable kinds of animals. His pleasure was inviting offensive sorts such as yucky field mice, the slowest turtles, and even slimy frogs to his home. It was offensive to the pompous and arrogant ducks to associate with such worthless creatures. These prideful ducks thought of them as dumb, unsophisticated, and ugly beasts compared to their own perceived good manners and beauty.
